Earn 25 Free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points Instantly — Plus Earn Up to 1,100 More Points

I  received two separate e-mail messages from Hertz pertaining to two separate promotions: one where you can earn 25 free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points instantly where if you rent a vehicle for one day, you can earn 550 bonus Gold Plus Rewards points; and the other where you earn 550 bonus Gold Plus Rewards points if you opt to add Loss Damage Waiver insurance on your car rental at an additional cost — but whether or not both offers can be combined is unknown.

Here are both promotions in greater detail:

How to Find Out if You Qualify for This Offer

Although this offer appears to be targeted, you have a good shot at qualifying for this offer anyway — and the only way to find out if you indeed qualify for this offer is to take a few seconds of your time to register for this promotion as a member of the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards frequent renter loyalty program.

Bonus Gold Plus Rewards points — which I have earned from previous similar promotions such as this one — have not yet expired; but that does not mean that the points are guaranteed not to expire after 24 months have elapsed. Taking advantage of this promotion where you will earn 550 bonus Gold Plus Rewards points after one vehicle rental is a recommended way to keep the Gold Plus Rewards points in your account from expiring.

Now for the details of the other offer…

Earn 550 Gold Plus Rewards Points When You Add Loss Damage Waiver On Your Hertz Car Rental

You could earn 550 Gold Plus Rewards points when you add Loss Damage Waiver on your car rental with Hertz — enough to redeem for a free weekend day — with any vehicle rental through Saturday, December 31, 2016 when you reserve the vehicle to rent in advance.

Adding the Loss Damage Waiver — or LDW — to your car rental will supposedly protect the car by covering any unexpected damages to it to give you piece of mind…

…and if you are still not sure about what is Loss Damage Waiver, then you can watch this official video from Hertz designed to sell you on purchasing Loss Damage Waiver for the vehicle which you rent.

There are three ways to add Loss Damage Waiver to your car rental with Hertz:

  • Select Loss Damage Waiver — or LDW — when you book your reservation
  • Go to the Hertz counter and add it at the time of picking up the vehicle
  • Update your Gold Profile with the Loss Damage Waiver so that it is automatically added with every rental

Remember to select Gold Plus Rewards points on your Gold Profile and during each reservation to receive your bonus.

Is the Loss Damage Waiver Insurance Coverage Worth 550 Gold Plus Rewards Points?

I went through the process of going through renting cars in a few locations on random days.

Renting an economy class car in Atlanta from Saturday, October 15, 2016 through Sunday, October 16, 2016 would cost a total of $62.52, which I think is rather expensive — but then again, a similar rental from Avis would cost a total of $63.06. The Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $29.99 per day for that rental. For a full size class vehicle, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $31.49 per day for that rental. For a Prestige Class collection vehicle, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $41.99 per day for that rental.

Renting an economy class car in New York from Tuesday, October 18, 2016 through Wednesday, October 19, 2016 would cost a total of $121.44 — a similar rental from Avis was an entire penny less — and as expensive as New York can be, I have never paid that much money for a rental car for one day whenever I rented a car in that city. However, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would only cost an additional $9.00 per day for that rental — regardless of the vehicle class from economy to full size. For a sport utility vehicle which seats seven people, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $12.00 per day for that rental — but renting that vehicle for the day without the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost $176.38.

The previous examples were only one day; so let us try for five days: renting an economy class car in Dallas from Sunday, November 6, 2016 through Friday, November 11, 2016 would cost a total of $478.95 — a similar rental from Avis would cost a total of $487.15. The Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $26.99 per day for that rental. For a full size class vehicle, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional $28.99 per day for that rental. For a Prestige Class collection vehicle, the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage would cost an additional whopping $89.99 per day to that $1,121.28 rental for a grand total of $1,696.21.

Summary

As you can see, finding out if the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage is worth the cost is not a simple process which only takes seconds. For starters, you will most likely find cheaper options on the total cost of renting a vehicle at other rental car companies. For example, renting a car in Dallas for the same week at Payless Car Rental totals $246.93, which is a savings of $232.02, or almost half of the price. Payless Car Rental is not a no-name brand: it was acquired by Avis Budget Group in 2013.

Despite the information which is presented in the aforementioned video, your primary automobile insurance or your credit card which you use to pay for the car rental might include coverage for rental cars. If so, carefully read the terms and conditions of the policy and ensure that you understand exactly what the policy covers before relying on it to cover any damage which can occur on a rental vehicle in the event of an accident.

So, too, should you carefully read the terms and conditions of the Loss Damage Waiver insurance before purchasing that option when renting a car. Tires and wheels are usually an exclusion from that policy; so even if you purchase Loss Damage Waiver protection for the rental car, you might still have to pay for a wheel which was dented from hitting a pothole in the road. Be sure that you find out what are the limitations of that policy and what else is not covered.

The offer for 550 Gold Plus Rewards points for renting a car for one day is available to select members of the Gold Plus Rewards frequent renter loyalty program only residing in the United States or Canada — meaning that it could possibly be targeted; so double check with Hertz before booking your reservation, as advance reservations are required during this promotion.

Insurance is basically a gamble in general. By purchasing insurance, you are betting that something will happen to the car while renting it; and the rental car company is betting that nothing will happen so that it can clear a nice profit…

…but if you have an automobile insurance policy or a credit card, you might already be covered for damages to rental vehicles. Although this is an intriguing promotion, 550 Gold Plus Rewards bonus points is usually not worth the cost of purchasing the Loss Damage Waiver unless you absolutely need to purchase the insurance coverage — or unless the cost of purchasing the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage option is only $9.00.

Finally, Stefan Krasowski of Rapid Travel Chai wondered if you can take advantage of both offers simultaneously, as the terms and conditions of both offers claim that they cannot be used with any other promotion other than your CDP number. I would say that you probably would not earn 1,100 Gold Plus Rewards points on renting a vehicle for one day while purchasing the Loss Damage Waiver insurance coverage option; and if not, then two separate rentals — one for each promotion — should net you those 1,100 Gold Plus Rewards points…

…but if the cost of renting those vehicles from Hertz is significantly more expensive than similar vehicle rentals from other rental car companies, then arguably neither promotion is worth your attention.
