Are Security Checkpoint Full Body Images Being Stored Instead of Discarded?

Due to the allegation that the Feds admit storing checkpoint body scan images, there is a rather heated debate between FlyerTalk members and Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, personnel.

Did any agency of the United States federal government actually lie about not storing images captured with full-body imaging scanners? Should airline passengers feel secure and safe, or should they avoid those machines altogether when passing through the security checkpoint at an airport? Is it difficult or impossible to avoid the scanners?
