California to Secede From the United States as a Separate Nation?

Imagine that you have an upcoming business trip to California. You might be required to carry your passport along with you when you pass through border control and immigration…

…and imagine if that scenario actually became a reality.

California to Secede From the United States as a Separate Nation?

Californians will go to the polls in the spring of 2019 in a historic vote to decide by referendum if California should secede from the United States and become an independent country.

According to Yes California, “As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland. Point by point, California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states.”

Using the citizen’s ballot measure process to put an initiative before the voters in 2018 which would establish an independence plebiscite on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the campaign of Yes California must collect 585,407 valid signatures from registered voters in California by Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

There are nine reasons why this secession is being considered — all of which are explained at the aforementioned Internet web site:

  1. Peace and security
  2. Elections and government
  3. Trade and regulation
  4. Debt and taxes
  5. Immigration
  6. Natural resources
  7. The environment
  8. Health and medicine
  9. Education

Summary

California becoming a sovereign nation should be interesting if only because a northern portion of the state wants to secede and become the state of Jefferson — and of course, that does not include the possibility for the District of Columbia to become a state as well.

The United States has been divided on a number of issues in recent years; and while the possibility of its boundaries and borders being altered might have been shrugged off years ago as a stunt of sorts, there may be an increased chance of that happening — although the processes of secession or statehood is difficult enough that it is not probable for all intents and purposes.

If that wall between Mexico and the United States is actually built, perhaps it can be done after California secedes from the United States and becomes its own country — saving American citizens from paying for approximately 140.4 miles of a total of 1,933.4 miles of that wall…

  1. The precedent was set during the civil war: if a state tries to secede, the federal government will send in troops to quell the insurrection. Trump’s term would still be ongoing when the referendum takes place, and if need be, he would act as our modern-day Abe Lincoln.

  2. Oh, great – Trump becomes the new Lincoln and we nuke La La land and Babylon by the Bay to save the union?

    1. Well, AlohaDaveKennedy — as Steely Dan once sang in the 1973 song My Old School:

      “California….tumbles into the sea…”

  3. A few yrs ago, Rick Perry mentioned for TX to secede, by the same discontent.

CA gave Helllary 4 million votes, that’s how she “won” by 2 mil. If they go out, she can be their first lady president, and Founding Mother, how amazing!

  4. funny how when the right talks about this topic it is patriotic, but when the rational, educated people talk about it, then supreme leader trumpdump should send in troops…

Who needs California when we have such developed states like Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi…just like who needs teeth when you can have guns!

As for Hillary becoming the first president (with an honest election process for a change), then there is a real justification for her to actually build a wall, because 10 years later, when the third world nation population of the great again america realize they don’t have jobs, health or food, they will try to migrate to California.

  5. I guess when Cali liberals said they were more patriotic than conservatives bc they opposed Obama, we csn kind of finally call BS on that? I live in the bay area, and I would be happy to give the separatists San Francisco and be done with it. Good riddance to bad trash.

  6. It’s always shocking to me, to see the hatred of California by the rest of the country.

I wasn’t born here, only moved here 10 years ago. But constantly see comments about how happy everyone will be when it falls into the sea, or is shaken to rubble, or whatever other catastrophe they salivate over. After THE BUBBLE popped and the budget was in trouble, all anyone asked me when I went east was “what will you do when California goes BANKRUPT?” and you could hear how they ached for it to happen. When California budget is now in surplus, does anyone congratulate us or rejoice? No.

Do the people of Californa rejoice when there’s some natural disaster in other parts of the country? No.

The fact is, y’all don’t understand it’s a place, like any other place. With kids, dogs, pickup trucks and rednecks too. Maybe YOU folks should do some navel-gazing about how you treat fellow Americans.

    1. I believe you make a good argument for state’s rights. I’m a fan of states having their own policies/identities, with the federal government only doing what the Constitution explicitly says it should do (i.e. one common military, one common diplomatic voice, one common currency, free trade/movement between states, a basic set of unalienable rights, a supreme court, etc).

Of course, if states share a common currency, the solvency of each state remains everyone’s businesses; no different than the EU has been dealing with regarding Greece.

The EU is slowly centralizing to become closer to the USA, and at the same time, the USA is decentralizing to become closer to the EU. I believe there is a happy-medium somewhere in-between.

  7. Sometimes I go to Youtube just to watch a few crucial hours of MSNBC’s election night coverage — I get such a warm and fuzzy feeling… My favorite parts? 1) Chris Matthews’ reflexive scowls throughout his personal ordeal, 2) Rachel Madcow becoming unhinged (even more than usual), and 3) the hilarious, frantic, and increasingly futile search for Hillary’s ‘path’ to 270 on the map. Oh, and Chris Matthew saying ‘That’s a bitch’ on air when Trump won North Carolina. All good stuff!

  8. Marvellous – if you could arrange for NYC to secede as well then the rest of the world won’t need to bother with the “US” at all.

  9. I live in California. This will never happen. But, there is a lot to say about us being able to stand on our own… and that we give the Federal government way more in taxes than we receive back. A perfect example of California’s Liberal mindset… take from the rich to give to the poor.
