Decline Housekeeping and Receive Starpoints

If you are a Starwood Preferred Guest member and are staying at the Seattle Sheraton, you can earn either a US$5.00 gift card per day to the hotel restaurant or 500 Starpoints per day simply for declining daily housekeeping, according to FlyerTalk member STM in the Decline Housekeeping for Starpoints thread.

There are other FlyerTalk members who believe this is a good idea: the property saves money on costs associated with housekeeping, and the guest profits. A bonus benefit to the guest is to not have to worry about hanging a Do Not Disturb sign outside on the room door.

Is this an idea that should spread to other Starwood Preferred Guest properties? Should other hotels and hotel chains adopt this idea? What are the disadvantages, as well as other benefits, to this idea?

I like trashing my room and not having that guilty look as a pass by the housekeeper. So, hopefully tis idea will catch on!
