How You Can Help Victims of Hurricane Matthew — and Earn Miles

H urricane Matthew is currently little more than a memory, as its remnants have been swept away out over the Atlantic Ocean…

…but to many people, the storm has left reminders which still exist in the form of extensive damage and lost loved ones. Record storm surges, substantial flooding from torrential rains, and high winds battered many areas from Jamaica to Haiti to Cuba to the Bahamas to the southeastern coast of the United States.

No storm in history lasted longer as a Category 4 or Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic Basin or the eastern Caribbean longer than what was Hurricane Matthew.

Worst of all, at least 1,027 people were killed as a result of Hurricane Matthew — most of whom were in Haiti; and at least 21 of those people were in the United States — and the death toll continues to rise as a cholera outbreak has been declared in Haiti.

If you had wished you could do something to help, here is your opportunity, as you can donate funds to charitable organizations through United Airlines and American Airlines — and you can score some frequent flier loyalty program miles in the process while possibly claiming a tax deduction as incentives.

Summary

The good news is that the departure of the former hurricane means that it can cause no more trouble; and the operations of commercial air travel should be close to normal by now — but there are people who were directly affected by Hurricane Matthew who can use some assistance in getting their lives back to as close to normal as possible…

…and for a limited time, you can do some good while getting some miles and a possible tax deduction in return.

What is being offered by both American Airlines and United Airlines are not bad deals by any stretch of the imagination — and if you know of any other organizations through which donations can be contributed to assist people who were adversely affected by Hurricane Matthew, please post information about them in the Comments section below.
