One-Way Car Rentals of Up to 4 Hours: $19.99 — Including Fuel — But…

H ave you ever wanted to rent a car for just a few hours while in a city and return it to the airport — or vice versa?

Avis has just such a program for you called Go One Way Your Way at select locations throughout the United States. You can reserve a vehicle to rent at least 48 hours in advance and either pick it up in the heart of town and return it to the airport on a Sunday or Monday — or pick it up at the airport and return it while in the city on a Thursday or Friday. The rental rate of up to four hours — including fuel, unlimited miles and Free Loss Damage Waiver — is $19.99.

Of course, taxes, concession recovery fees, the vehicle license recovery fee, tolls, and the customer facility charges may apply and are extra, as they are not included in that $19.99 rate.

I decided to test it out by reserving a full-sized car in Atlanta at the airport this coming Friday, August 22, 2014 for four hours. Including all taxes and fees, the total cost was $32.01.

However, if I rented the car for an entire day — that is, returned it to the airport on Saturday, August 23, 2014 within 24 hours — the full-sized car had a rate of $22.00 with a total of $34.46, including all taxes and fees but not fuel.

A compact car for 24 hours — if you pay Avis in advance — rented on the same days can be yours for a rate of $13.60 with a total of $24.20, including all taxes and fees but not fuel.

If you use the uberX car service, your flat fare to either downtown or midtown Atlanta from the airport is $35.00; and if your final destination in Atlanta is reasonably close to a stop of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority — or MARTA — your fare is $2.50 each way.

So is this offer a good deal? Not particularly — at least in Atlanta…

…but if you need a private vehicle for more than just transporting you between the airport and the downtown of one of the aforementioned cities for four hours or fewer during the times this offer is valid; you are not concerned about possible parking fees during the time you have the vehicle; and the daily rental rate is significantly more expensive — then this offer is certainly an option worth considering…

…especially as you do not have to worry about stopping at a gasoline station to fill up the car with fuel.

    Great article and comparison Brian.

However I was wondering, if Im flying for vacation with the family and renting a car with say the 4 hour option, would it make more sense to rent for 4 hours at the airport, and pickup another rental in-town at the drop off locations for the remainder of a week, or would there be no material cost savings by avoiding the airport surcharges this way?

    1. Brian Cohen says:

I would initially say no, Ssam — but I think it would have to depend on to what city you are traveling and when.

My experience is that the rental car rates in New York have usually been significantly higher than those in Atlanta, so New York might be a better deal — and, of course, rates would typically be higher during a weekend near a major holiday than during an “off-season.” It would also depend on the rate of the car you are renting in-town. There are too many variables for me to give a definitive answer, unfortunately.

Do you have an idea of where and when you might think of taking advantage of this offer, Ssam?
