Photographic Chronology: A Morning in Howth, Ireland

ot knowing how to kill a crisp fall morning on the day of a flight operated by Ryanair — which was scheduled to depart from Dublin Airport in the early afternoon for Madrid — a colleague suggested that I spend some time in Howth, which is a seaside town approximately 16 kilometers east and slightly south of the airport.

Another colleague — who had rented a car — was also interested in visiting Howth; so we departed from the Hilton Dublin Airport hotel property and took what eventually became a short yet scenic drive to Howth.

Here are some photographs which I took in chronological order while we were in Howth:

Although you will likely not get close views of the airplanes departing from Dublin Airport, you can still sit on a bench and partake in some “planespotting.”

You might want to even imbibe in a pint or two at the local pub, which I did not do because I do not drink alcoholic beverages.

If you have a few hours before your flight departs from Dublin Airport and it happens to be a nice day, do be sure to take the short drive of approximately 20 minutes to Howth and spend some time relaxing and watching people.

  1. If you have 1 hr +/- there’s a nice coastal walk in Howth. Everyone in town can direct you there, it well known. It’s about a 10 min walk from the station to the start of the path. V good fish and chips place 3 min from the station. It’s a local chain, can’t remember the name of it, just look for the crowd outside the take-out shop (and the awful looking sign). If you’re looking for a daytrip from Dublin take the train to Killiney, head to your right when leaving the station and walk to Dalkey. What views! What fancy homes! When you get to Dalkey have a pint in Finnegan’s, the pub Bono took Michelle O to when she visited Ireland. Take the train from Dalkey back to Dublin. A daytrip that can’t be beat.

  2. I tried to work this into our last visit to Dublin but it didn’t work out. The bed was just too comfortable. It’s back on the list for next visit, thanks for sharing the photos!
