Pre-Black Friday Sale: Awards as Low as 10,000 SkyMiles Each Way
D uring a sale called the Pre-Black Friday Sale, as low as 10,000 Delta SkyMiles are needed for one-way award travel based on a required round-trip itinerary — including only select origins and destinations within the contiguous 48 United States for award travel — but you must purchase your ticket at least 21 days in advance of your intended departure date by Monday, November 30, 2015, which is ironically Cyber Monday.
Travel must begin on or after Tuesday, January 5, 2016; and all travel must be completed by Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
For all markets, blackout dates are in effect Friday, February 12, 2015 through Tuesday, February 16, 2016; and Friday, February 19, 2016.
Terms and Conditions
Changes to the award ticket must occur at least 72 hours prior to the departure time of the flight being changed. Award tickets booked within 72 hours of departure are not refundable and cannot be redeposited or reissued unless prohibited by local law or within the risk-free cancellation period. No changes will be permitted to the originating flight of award tickets booked within 72 hours; however, changes to the return flight are permitted if it is not within 72 hours and the change is made at least 72 hours prior to flight departure. Fees apply for any changes. Voluntary changes to award tickets after promotion has ended may result in an increase in mileage costs.
Taxes and fees — such as for checking baggage and for purchasing your tickets either via telephone or at a ticket counter or ticket office — are not included in the price, which can cost a minimum of $5.60 each way for travel within the contiguous 48 United States. Your itinerary must include a Saturday night as a minimum requirement.
Although a significant number of the sample flights seem to be little more than what is considered to be a short hop — such as from Atlanta to Fort Walton Beach, for example — there are some good deals in this sale. Notable deals include from Detroit to Orlando; from New York to San Diego; from Cincinnati to Las Vegas; and from Seattle to Tucson — all starting at a cost of 10,000 SkyMiles each way.
As with many sales offered by Delta Air Lines, there is no definitive list of routes or destinations included in this sale: “Don’t see your city listed? Click Book Now and enter your cities for more award deals.” This means that you have to do the research yourself — similarly to the effect of dynamic pricing of award tickets. To me, that dilutes the attractiveness of sales such as this one.
Additionally, this sale does not seem to be as The Great 48 Escape sale offered this past July, where as low as 5,000 Delta SkyMiles were needed for one-way award travel based on a required round-trip itinerary; and a minimum of only 14 days were required for an advance purchase instead of 21 days.
Still, there are some good deals which could be secured; but you need to be diligent about finding them — depending on the route.
