Trams Out of Service Until April 2019 at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

Both trams in the Edward H. McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport are out of service effective as of yesterday, Tuesday, January 8, 2019 through Thursday, April 11, 2019 during the final phase of upgrades — and tram service is not expected to resume until Friday, April 12, 2019.

The first of three phases of the project was launched in September of 2018 with one tram in operation and the other tram out of service. Both trams were open for the second phase in November of 2018 in time for the busy holiday season.

The upgrades include the installation of new hardware and software.

If you are expected to be in the Edward H. McNamara Terminal during the period of time which tram service will not operate, allow extra time to walk to your gate. Moving walkways will be operating. As always, wheelchair assistance will be available through your airline or by calling Prospect Airport Services at 734-921-7200 upon arrival at the Departures Level curb or in the Ground Transportation Center.

Summary

I noticed that the tram service at the airport seemed to take longer than usual when I traveled as a passenger on the new flagship Airbus A350-900 airplane operated by Delta Air Lines — with which I was not impressed — from Detroit to Amsterdam a few months ago. Now I know the reason why.

Most people who use the terminal in which the trams are located are typically passengers of Delta Air Lines — so if you plan on traveling to or from Detroit using Delta Air Lines, you will most likely be affected by the temporary outage of tram service. Plan around the outage accordingly.
