Travel Alert January 2018: San Francisco Weather

If the western United States is in your travel plans over the next few days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to the effects resulting from a powerful storm.

Travel Alert January 2018: San Francisco Weather

A strong weather system would not necessarily normally disrupt travel to the greater San Francisco Bay Area; but because vast portions of the area were decimated by wildfires last year, there is little left in terms of natural vegetation to prevent mudslides from occurring from the first significant precipitation event in approximately a year.

Rainfall rates can reach one inch per hour — and when accompanied by strong winds and possible thunder and lightning, this storm could potentially cause widespread damage and travel disruptions.

Heavy rains are also forecast for the Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas; while snow is expected in the mountainous areas inland. Look for travel disruptions in these areas as well.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to the western United States over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of these areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.

Here are two airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for San Francisco for Monday, January 8, 2018; and Friday, January 12, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • United Airlines has issued a travel alert for San Francisco for Monday, January 8, 2018; and Friday, January 12, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Summary

Additional airlines may possibly issue travel alerts to more airports in the western United States within the next 24 hours; so be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
