Video: Demolition of the Georgia Dome

An arguably notable part of the Atlanta skyline no longer exists, as the Georgia Dome was demolished by 4,800 of pounds of explosives earlier today, leaving a pile of rubble and dust in seconds — and it was all caught on video.

This series of videos from WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in Atlanta shows the demolition of the Georgia Dome from different angles.

The Georgia Dome was completed in 1992 at a cost of $214 million and was home to the Atlanta Falcons football team until last year — as well as the site for Super Bowl XXVIII, Super Bowl XXXIV, numerous other championship games, regional competitions for Bands of America, and venues for team gymnastics for women and the “Dream Team” basketball team for the Summer Olympic Games in 1996.

The new Mercedes-Benz Stadium — equipped with a retractable roof which leaks during rain — opened on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at an estimated cost of $1.6 billion; and is now the new home of the Atlanta Falcons.

Maybe I am crazy; but if I paid $214 million for a building, I would expect for it to last longer than 26 years.

In my opinion, the demolition of the Georgia Dome is the latest in a spate of squandering millions of dollars which could have been used elsewhere. As one example, SunTrust Park — which is currently the home of the Atlanta Braves — opened to the public earlier this year in Cobb County and replaced Turner Field, which only lasted 20 years before being converted to a college football stadium.

Whatever happened to the days when stadiums would last for many decades?

Regardless, I will not miss the Georgia Dome — to the point where I did not think taking a special trip to photograph and video the demolition was worth my time. I have been there several times — including watching the Atlanta Falcons play the New Orleans Saints during the regular season of the National Football League some years ago.
