Where Can You Find Gasoline for Less Than $1.40 Per Gallon in the United States?

he cost for a gallon of gasoline in the United States did not increase during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays as some people had feared. Rather, an increasing number of states in the United States have fuel stations which are selling gasoline at less than $1.40 per gallon as of the time this article was posted…

…but which states are these; and where are those fuel stations located?

List of Fuel Stations Where Gasoline Costs Less Than $1.40 Per Gallon

Here is a list of five states — according to GasBuddy.com — where fuel stations which are selling gasoline at less than $1.40 per gallon are located:

  • Ohio In Toledo, one fuel station sells gasoline at $1.37 per gallon — unfortunately, you have to be a member of Costco to take advantage of that — but there are at least four other fuel stations which currently are selling gasoline at $1.40 per gallon; so do not be surprised if they lower their price by at least a penny in the near future
  • Arkansas Two fuel stations sell gasoline for $1.39 per gallon — one in Fort Smith; and the other in Siloam Springs, which is located approximately 70 miles north of Fort Smith just east of the Oklahoma border
  • Kansas Your purchase will cost as low as $1.39 per gallon at two fuel stations in Parsons, which is a suburb located approximately 55 miles northwest of Joplin, Missouri
  • Oklahoma There are plenty of fuel stations which sell gasoline for less than $1.40 per gallon in various parts of this state — including Tulsa and Oklahoma City — with at least one fuel station where the price per gallon is as low as $1.35 in Oklahoma City
  • Virginia Fincastle — located approximately 22 miles north of Roanoke, which I passed on my trip as a passenger on Megabus — has one fuel station where the price per gallon is as low as $1.39; while another fuel station sells gasoline for as low as $1.29 per gallon
  • Texas Of the five fuel stations which sell gasoline at less than $1.40 per gallon, one in Alvin, Pasadena and Santa Fe each sell it for $1.39 per gallon; one fuel station in Houston sells it for $1.36 per gallon; and there is actually one fuel station in El Campo — approximately 71 miles southwest of Houston — where you can inexpensively fill up your ten-gallon hat for $1.29 per gallon

Summary

Click on the names of the states in the list above for the exact location of the fuel stations which sell gasoline at less than $1.40 per gallon; and if your state is not on the list above, it is quite likely with the continuation of decreasing gasoline prices that there are fuel stations located within it which sell gasoline for less than $1.75 per gallon — if you know where to look.

The price per gallon of gasoline at fuel stations in some states — Missouri and Louisiana are two of several examples — have been vacillating above and below that $1.40 mark recently; so keep a close eye on the states towards the top of this list. They will most likely dip below that mark once again.

Once again, the most expensive fuel station in the 50 United States is located in South San Francisco in California, where the price is $5.03 per gallon.

  1. $1.39 or $1.29 a gallon in parts of VA?

We’re still paying around $1.65 a gallon in the Norfolk, VA area— and yes $1.65 beats the pants off $3.00 a gallon— but considering a lot of oil comes off tanker ships that dock at the port of Virginia in Norfolk, it would be nice to see that $1.39 price around here.

    1. With that logic, Max M, you would think that North Dakota — where a lot of the “fracking” for oil occurs — that it would be one of the least-expensive states on average for gasoline; but it is not…

…and yet Oklahoma is currently the least expensive state on average for a gallon of gasoline in the United States. “Fracking” is done there too.

Norfolk is on the other side of Virginia from the Roanoke area; and yes, that $1.29 and $1.39 have been in effect for at least a week now. I found it hard to believe myself…

      1. Fracking for oil is not the same as refining oil into gasoline. How many refineries are in ND? There are several dozen in Oklahoma. Plus OK has one of the lowest states gas taxes.

    1. I agree, Steve. That is actually currently evident as part of the differences between gasoline prices from state to state; but that is not stopping some people from predicting those prices to going as low as a dollar per gallon…
