500 Free Points: Did You Receive This Offer From Virgin America?

C heck your e-mail account, as you might have received an invitation to get 500 free points simply for responding. Earlier today, I received an e-mail message whose title displayed Happy Holidays. Unwrap your 500 Elevate bonus points.

I clicked open the e-mail message, which said the following:

Loyal Elevate member? Thank you, Virgin America — but I never flew as a passenger on one of your airplanes. Why? Because you offer no service at any of the airports near where I am based…

…but I still think this is a very nice way to engage with customers. I clicked — despite most likely never being able to use those points.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer in its entirety:

The typical earn for Elevate members is 5 points per $1 spent on the base fare for Virgin America flights — in this offer, you will receive a one-time bonus of 500 Elevate reward points. Guests must be enrolled with an active account in the Elevate frequent flyer program and claim their bonus by correctly entering their Elevate number online on or before December 31, 2014.  Only one bonus points award will be credited per Elevate member account. Eligible Elevate members will receive their bonus reward points up to 3 weeks after submitting their claim. Bonus reward points do not qualify towards Elevate Silver or Elevate Gold status.  Bonus reward points cannot be transferred between accounts and will only be posted to the Elevate membership account as detailed in the notification email.  Other Elevate program terms and conditions apply, as detailed at https://www.virginamerica.com/cms/elevate-frequent-flyer/member-guide. Points required to redeem an Elevate travel reward on Virgin America will be publicly available on a seat and flight-specific basis and are subject to change. Domestic reward bookings are subject to a security fee of $5.60 per segment, payable by credit card or Virgin America credit file. The Passenger Facility Charge and Segment Fees are waived for domestic reward bookings. For international reward bookings, Virgin America guests are responsible for the taxes and fees incurred from international travel. These taxes and fees are subject to change at the discretion of each country’s government and also vary from country to country depending on the origin and destination. Reward redemptions for Partner Airline flights are subject to availability and capacity control. Partner Airlines may limit the number of reward seats available on any flight and may prohibit travel on certain days. Partner Airline reward flight redemptions do not include any applicable passenger taxes, fees, charges and surcharges, which may cost up to $2,000 and which will be charged to and payable by each guest. The amount of such fees is subject to change and are payable at the time of booking.

“Eligible Elevate members”? Other than already having been a member of the Virgin America Elevate frequent flier loyalty program since it was first launched — possibly due to some sort of promotion or contest — I cannot think of anyone less eligible than I…

…but far be it from me not to be grateful, as I am — especially after viewing this message of thanks. More importantly, if I am eligible, you are most likely eligible as well.
