For several months, 23 lodging companies around the world had significantly relaxed their typically restrictive policies pertaining to change and cancellation fees by suspending them on a temporary basis due to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, which had spread worldwide…

6 Lodging Companies: Change and Cancellation Policy Not Without Penalty Anymore?

…but at six of those 23 lodging companies, either the penalties pertaining to the change and cancellation fees are no longer in effect because the expiration dates of the temporary flexible policy has not changed — or the temporary flexible change and cancellation policy can no longer be found.

Without further ado, here is a list of the six lodging companies which are based in the United States and around the world whose updated policies pertaining to the suspension of change and cancellation fees on a temporary basis seem to no longer be in effect at the time this article was written.

Best Western Hotels & Resorts

The Choice Hotels flexible cancellation policy during the 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic is nowhere to be found and assumed to be expired with the resumption of the normal policies for changing and cancelling reservations.

Choice Privileges Rewards Frequent Guest Loyalty Program Points

The expiration of Choice Privileges Rewards points has been paused until Thursday, December 31, 2020 — allowing members more time to redeem points and achieve greater flexibility when planning future travel.

As for earning and maintaining elite level status for 2021, opportunities will continue to be evaluated as the current situation with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus evolves; and you will be kept updated on all changes to Choice Privileges Rewards through its official Internet web site.

For all Marriott International hotel and resort properties worldwide, the following policies are being implemented for guests — including reservations with rates already paid in advance which are typically more restrictive:

  • With existing reservations for any future arrival date full changes or cancellation without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival will be allowed as long as the change or cancellation is implemented by Sunday, July 5, 2020. Please note that any changes to existing reservations will be subject to availability and any rate differences.
  • Booking new reservations for any future arrival date through Sunday, July 5, 2020, the reservation will be allowed to be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival date. Please note that changes to the reservation will be subject to availability and any rate differences.

For members of the Marriott Bonvoy frequent guest loyalty program:

  • Status Extension: We want you to be able to enjoy the status that you earned in 2019. With that in mind, the status you earned in 2019 will be extended to February 2022.
  • Points Expiration: To provide you ample time to redeem points, the expiration of points will be paused until February 2021. At that time, your points will only expire if your account has been inactive for at least 24 months.
  • Suite Night Awards (SNAs): We have extended the expiration of suite night awards by one year from December 31, 2020 to December 31, 2021.
  • Free Night Award (FNA): Members who currently have an active Free Night Award (FNA) expiring in 2020 as part of their credit card benefit, annual choice benefit, promotions or travel package will be able to use it through January 31, 2021. (Exception: Members in mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan the Free Night Awards will be extended 12 months into 2021 from the date of expiration).

Millennium Hotels & Resorts

The Wyndham Hotels & Resort flexible cancellation policy during the 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic has not changed at the time this article was written and assumed to be expired with the resumption of the normal policies for changing and cancelling reservations.

Wyndham has enhanced its policies as follows:

  • We are pausing the expiration of any Wyndham Rewards points until September 30, 2020 and have extended current Wyndham Rewards Member Levels (status) for all members globally through the end of 2021.
  • We are committed to, and actively exploring, additional steps that we can take to help all Wyndham Rewards members globally, which will include relaxed Member Level earning requirements, among other options. Due to rapidly evolving circumstances, it’s too soon to share specifics, however, we will do so as soon as possible.

Summary

17 other lodging companies have either extended their flexible cancellation and change policies without penalty; or they had been extended already in the past; or the expiration dates had already been generous and are still in effect. An updated article will be posted soon pertaining to these lodging companies.

In the meantime, I am hoping that the information in this article is inaccurate and that I will be corrected on it, which would mean that the flexible cancellation and change policies without penalty of the aforementioned lodging companies in this article have indeed been extended — otherwise, purposely allowing them to expire while the main reason for their existence in the first place had never subsided is a rather unfriendly way to treat customers, in my opinion…
