A New Feature at The Gate January 2020 Which I Am Both Embarrassed and Happy to Introduce

A new feature has been implemented here at The Gate which I am very happy to introduce — and yet embarrassed about it because this functionality should have been a part of The Gate since it returned to BoardingArea back on Friday, August 1, 2014.

A New Feature at The Gate January 2020 Which I Am Both Embarrassed and Happy to Introduce

The new feature is simply a search engine; and you are probably wondering why I had not noticed that The Gate did not have a search engine for 5.5 years.

The answer is simple: I am always logged into the administrative part of The Gate; and I thought that the search engine which is included there was also available to you as well. It is a fairly good search engine which is not perfunctory in functionality, as I rarely have a problem finding articles at The Gate whenever I use it.

Quite bizarrely, no one alerted me of the absence of a search engine — until one day recently, a reader alerted me to the missing functionality when I suggested searching for articles using a term. When the reader challenged me to search for articles without being logged into the administrative part of The Gate, I could not find it.

Fortunately, the team at BoardingArea — including Randy Petersen, who is the founder of BoardingArea — wasted no time in ensuring that not only did The Gate have a search engine, but that it also worked properly…

…and I thank them profusely for adding that functionality, as well as the reader who alerted me.

How to Use the Search Engine for The Gate

The search engine is easy to use: simply enter a word or term in the Search box. The first set of results will be articles which have the word or term in the title; and once that is exhausted chronologically, articles with the word or term in the text of the story will then appear in chronological order.

On your portable electronic device — such as a mobile telephone — you will find the search engine towards the bottom. Simply scroll down by swiping up until you reach the area below the page count but above the area where you would sign up for the free newsletter for The Gate.

When viewing the desktop version of The Gate from a computer, the search engine is near the top on the right side — again, above the area where you would sign up for the free newsletter for The Gate.

Solely for illustration purposes, the aforementioned search engine which I have always used when I am logged into the administrative part of The Gate is shown in the image below.

Summary

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience you might have experienced due to the lack of a search engine at The Gate. I hope that the implementation of this functionality significantly improves your experience of reading The Gate and finding information easily…

…and please let me know what I can to do improve your user experience at The Gate. You can either inform me using the Comments section of any article — including this one — as constructive suggestions and ideas are always welcome…

…or you can use the relatively new Feedback functionality, of which I need to catch up for those who left feedback for me.

Thank you again for reading The Gate.

I wouldn’t feel bad about it. Often Google does a great (better?) job of searching a web site than the web site’s own search engine! But kudos for noticing a missing feature and adding it.
