American Airlines Offers Fast Track to Elite Status — Only to Later Be Removed and Possibly Targeted
Editor’s Note: This paragraph was added as of 23:07 Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 to reflect that the link to the promotion has since been removed and that the offer may be targeted to select individuals who received an ad directly from Google or facebook. It is unknown at this time if those FlyerTalk members who successfully registered for this promotion but were not targeted will still be able to take advantage of it. The original text to this article below remains unchanged. Please refer to this discussion for ongoing updates to what seems to be becoming a public relations debacle for American Airlines.
If you do not currently have elite status as an AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program member with American Airlines, now is your opportunity — provided that you register for this offer to “fast-track” your way to elite status by August 27, 2013 and use a special promotion code — and once you earn your level of elite status, you get to keep it through February 28, 2015.
You must earn the following number of elite qualification miles in order to achieve the following elite status levels:
- 6,000 elite qualification miles for Gold status
- 12,000 elite qualification miles for Platinum status
- 30,000 elite qualification miles for Executive Platinum status
All travel to earn elite qualification miles for elite status during this promotion begins as of September 1, 2013 and concludes on December 31, 2013; and all travel must be on qualifying airfares on American Airlines, American Eagle, American Connection carriers, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines and Qantas. Bonus American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program miles do not count toward elite status qualification. Other terms and conditions apply.
You are probably happy if you want elite status as an American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program member but currently do not have elite status — and you are most likely angry or irritated if you do already currently have elite status and earned it the “hard” way, as members of the American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program who currently have Gold, Platinum or Executive Platinum elite status are not eligible for this offer.
Some FlyerTalk members are elated at what they perceive as a fairly easy way to procure elite status in the American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program; while other FlyerTalk members are concerned about the ranks of American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program members with elite status swelling to the point where competition for benefits such as upgrades will be fierce and some of those benefits may become “diluted” as a result.
Before this promotion, you had to earn elite status through a challenge with elite qualifying points within a limited period of time and pay a fee which was not refundable — if you did not earn it the “hard” way.
Do you intend to take advantage of this offer if you qualify?
