At least eight men who were heavily armed with guns and hand grenades have reportedly penetrated security barriers at several entrances and launched an attack at Jinnah International Airport which serves Karachi.
Ten people have reportedly already been killed — including seven personnel of the Airport Security Force — and at least 16 people have supposedly been wounded amidst heavy fighting with security forces at the busiest airport in Pakistan. There is also at least one unconfirmed report that six of the gunmen have also been killed. Several aircraft were reported to have been damaged, with at least two airplanes on fire.
Fortunately, the terminal which is currently under siege is supposedly used for cargo and special operations — not typically for commercial flights, which operate out of a different terminal located approximately a kilometer away and was not attacked. “The VIP area is the old Karachi terminal”, explained FlyerTalk member needroos. “It is also used as a Hajj terminal for pilgrims to Mecca.”
Despite that, there are reports that some passengers are trapped in a lounge area; while all flights at the airport have been canceled until further notice.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time, which is reportedly still occurring…
