Canada American Express Platinum Card Annual Fee to Increase by 75%
FlyerTalk members who reside in Canada are finding out that their American Express Platinum Card annual fees are increasing from $399.00 to $699.00 — a greater than 75 percent increase — as of Friday, June 29, 2012.
The new benefits associated with the Canada American Express Platinum Card are as follows:
Complimentary enrollment in Priority Pass Worldwide
$200.00 annual Airline Fee Credit, to match the United States version of the American Express Platinum Card
No booking fees on any travel booked through American Express Platinum Card Travel Services
Toronto Pearson Airport expanded Priority Lane access, Complimentary Valet Service and 15 percent parking discount at on-site lots
Gold Elite membership with Club Carlson
Platinum Membership with Le Club Accorhotels
Preferred Golf Membership for a full year
Disappointed FlyerTalk members are threatening to not renew their American Express Platinum Card memberships — and I cannot say that I blame them. As it is, the benefits offered by American Express — whether in Canada or the United States — do not justify their annual fees, in my opinion. That certainly does not mean that the same applies to you, of course — but, as they say, “your mileage may vary.”
Additionally, I have had more than one bad experience with American Express to the point where I no longer carry an American Express card, nor will I consider applying for an American Express card membership anytime in the foreseeable future.
I personally would not recommend applying for an American Express Platinum Card with the benefits stated above for an annual fee of $699.00, as there is no way I would even come close to getting what I consider value for the money spent. However — as with anything else — if the benefits significantly outweigh the annual fee cost for you, then by all means apply for it.
