Delta Air Lines Now Offers Monthly SkyMiles Flash Sales — Starting at 35 Percent With the Current Sale

I  received an e-mail message from Delta Air Lines which informed me that the airline has launched monthly flash sales on SkyMiles awards on select flights to featured destinations where I can enjoy saving a significant amount of SkyMiles — and the first of these sales is currently in effect.

Award travel is subject to government-imposed taxes and fees and carrier-imposed charges, which are your responsibility and must be paid at the time the ticket is booked. Taxes, fees and charges imposed by the carrier depend upon the itinerary; and will range between:

  • $30.00 and $80.00 one-way for Main Cabin travel from the contiguous 48 United States to Caribbean
  • $70 and $130 one-way for Main Cabin travel from the Caribbean to the contiguous 48 United States

Terms and Conditions

Some routes may include one or more segments operated with single cabin aircraft featuring Main Cabin service in place of Delta Comfort+. Please check the itinerary for details and class of service.

Award Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights or in all markets.

Tickets are not refundable except in accordance with the cancellation policy of Delta Air Lines. Fees may apply for downgrades or reissues and itinerary changes. Award ticket changes must be implemented at least 72 hours prior to the departure time of the flight being changed. Award tickets booked within 72 hours of departure are not refundable and cannot be redeposited or reissued unless prohibited by local law or within the risk-free cancellation period. No changes will be permitted to the originating flight of award tickets booked within 72 hours; however, changes to the return flight are permitted if the return flight is not within 72 hours and the change is implemented at least 72 hours prior to flight departure.  Fees apply for any changes; and taxes and fees will apply. Voluntary changes to award tickets after the promotion has ended may result in an increase in mileage costs.

For travel between the contiguous 48 United States and the Caribbean, a $25.00 fee for the first checked bag and a $40.00 fee for second checked bag may apply. Allowances are subject to size and weight limits.

Redemption amounts, fees, rules, and offers are subject to change without notice.

Other restrictions, terms and conditions may apply.

Delta Air Lines seems to have been offering award sales more frequently in recent years since the change in 2015 of the SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program being based on revenue instead of on distance flown; and perhaps the airline decided to organize these sales into monthly flash sales…

…but I would not get too excited about them, as indicated by the most recent award sale being this tepid one at best last month.

Since the dynamic pricing model has officially been extended to pervade award travel as well — as Delta Air Lines no longer has award charts available to members of its SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program — customers are left to “roll the dice” and take a chance as to how many SkyMiles need to be redeemed for a certain award; and again with myriad factors to determine the final price.

As no award chart has recently been publicly released — one of the reasons why placing complete trust in the motives pertaining to the SkyMiles program has been more difficult in recent years — definitively calling the current flash sale a good deal is difficult to do…

…but saving any amount of SkyMiles on an award ticket is better than not saving any at all, I suppose — especially if one of the destinations is one which you would like to visit; so if you are interested in participating in this promotion, do your due diligence and research to ensure that you are indeed saving enough SkyMiles on award travel which is worth your while.
