As many as 15 militant attackers reportedly shot at dozens of people — including FlyerTalk member typical and his wife — armed with AK-47 assault rifles in a siege of the upscale Westgate Shopping Centre in Nairobi.
Although greater than 1,000 people were rescued since this violent terrorist attack began yesterday in retaliation for the military presence by Kenya in Somalia — where the Al-Shabaab militant group is based — at least 68 people were killed in the attack, according to The New York Times. Some of the hostages — including the wife of typical — are still missing at this time. Greater than 175 people were injured.
According to typical, he was to undergo surgery earlier today. Fortunately, his prognosis is good — but his wife is still missing.
The attackers were targeting people who were not Muslim by asking them the name of the mother of the prophet Mohammed. Those who answered correctly were supposedly spared; but typical reports that the terrorists did not ask him or his wife about their religious beliefs before they were shot.
I normally do not highlight discussions here at The Gate which are posted in the OMNI/PR forum on FlyerTalk due to the fact that some FlyerTalk members cannot access that forum — but if you can do so, please offer your support and prayers for typical and his wife.
Better yet — if one has not already been launched — I ask that you please start a discussion about the plight of typical and his wife in the CommunityBuzz! forum so that all members of the entire FlyerTalk community can have a chance to offer our support and best wishes.
In the meantime, typical, I hope that you and your wife reunite and completely return to good health and safety as soon as possible. Please keep us posted.
