Starting today, Quark Expeditions is having what it calls a Black Friday sale on ten select departures aboard three different vessels for the upcoming Antarctic season where you can save 50 percent on travel to Antarctica — and this sale will only last through Monday, December 2, 2013 at 5:00 in the afternoon Eastern Standard Time or until supplies last.
The least expensive option I can find at this time is the Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent voyage aboard the Sea Spirit departing on March 1, 2014 and returning on March 11, 2014, which will cost you a minimum of $3,997.50 after the discount — not including taxes, fees, and other additional expenses and incidentals — if you are willing to share a main deck suite with someone. Unfortunately, only the kayak option is available on that voyage.
Keep in mind that triple cabins — the least expensive way to get to Antarctica with Quark Expeditions — are excluded from this promotion. Full payment is due at the time of booking your reservation; and bookings must be confirmed on the day of the reservation — although inventory can be held for a maximum of four hours and cannot be held overnight. The discount is only valid on the voyage cost; other costs — such as the camping option and airfare, for example — are excluded from the discount. Other terms and conditions apply.
Here is a trip report by FlyerTalk member Endor, who traveled to Antarctica with Peregrine Adventures in March of 2006 — and Peregrine Adventures became a part of the same company as Quark Expeditions. Endor then patronized the services of Quark Expeditions to the Arctic and claims that Quark Expeditions provided “excellent, excellent service.”
Once again, I really wanted to take advantage of this promotion — as Antarctica is the only continent to which I have yet to visit — but I am unable to do so at this time. If I did go, I would ensure that I would take plenty of photographs and video of my experience — and because I prefer to stay overnight at a destination to count it as a place I have officially visited, I would have personally spent extra money and added the camping option.
Since I cannot seem to go at this time, I am hoping that you can take advantage of this offer — and if you do, please be certain to post a trip report on FlyerTalk.
The most recent sale by Quark Expeditions which offered a discount of 50 percent was offered back in September of this year — and the option with the lowest cost from that sale seemed to be less expensive than during the current sale.
You cannot book this special offer via the Internet; you must call a polar travel adviser at Quark Expeditions directly at 1-888-892-0073.
Ultimately, the very minimum of what I would prefer to do while in Antarctica is be with penguins and stay overnight at the South Pole — difficult but not impossible to do, as penguins usually reside near water while the South Pole is roughly centered on the Antarctic continent.
That dream — the most significant one for me at this time — will have to wait yet again, I suppose…
