Have You Ever Heard of Flizzr?

As I was conducting a cursory search for a rental car for a trip to Europe of which I plan on traveling later this year, the lowest rates I have consistently found were with a rental car company called Flizzr — and the rates at times even included unlimited kilometers; collision damage waiver; and theft protection.

Have You Ever Heard of Flizzr?

I tried to find information pertaining to this company on FlyerTalk; but to my surprise, absolutely no discussion of it exists there — not even the brand name itself — nor did I find anything at the official weblog of AutoSlash; so I did some more research.

Flizzr is apparently a budget brand of Sixt — much like Firefly Car Rental is actually a division of Hertz — and was launched within the past four years or so…

…but be aware that in exchange for the lower rates, you usually will not be able to enjoy the benefits typically offered by the parent company — nor will you likely receive good service, if you believe the reviews offered by contributors at TripAdvisor who advise to avoid this rental car company.

“BEWARE AND AVOID – CHEAP COMES AT A PRICE”, warned TripAdvisor member Refdef. “Cheap headline rate but very bad experience in Spain. Unable to contact them via the customer help line due to some special rate number. No response to web contact form. I’ve no idea what would happen if you had a breakdown. Maybe stuck without help?”

TripAdvisor member Muki A claims that the reason why rates are less expensive at Flizzr than with its competitors “is because they offer you a great deal and once you give them your credit card THEY CHARGE YOU OVER 4 TIMES THE AMOUNT.” The example given is that “We just rented a car from them in Luton and prepaid online 80 GBP for the rental, with no added on extras; insurance covered on the credit card; a returned car in perfect condition and a full gas tank, we were surprised to find a 350 pound bill after we returned the car!”

Additional charges are supposedly not only added at the time they have your credit card — but also after the vehicle is returned, according to TripAdvisor member ljdwine: “It appears to be their business plan to find damage to the exterior of the vehicle days AFTER it have been returned and email you an inflated bill for repair cost. ( 2,460.88 euro’s in my case ).”

A “horrible” experience was imparted by TripAdvisor member Alina C: “I prepaid for a car for 12 days and because my flight was delayed they just gave the car away. No refund, no resolution” was given.

Unfortunately, other members of TripAdvisor echoed similar experiences and advice — and with one or two exceptions, no one has refuted the claims — meaning that if I do rent a car, I will think twice before considering renting from Flizzr.

Summary

The temptation to rent a car from Flizzr is tempting to me — if only to impart my personal first-hand experience to you in a future article here at The Gate

…but although I offer 13 tips on what you can do to prevent from being scammed by a rental car company, I really am not all that motivated to purposely endure potential frustration and irritation with any company while I am traveling, as I strive to ensure that my travels are as free of hassle and impediments as possible.

  1. I always use Autoeurope.com. Have used them for years, since 2002/2003. Best cust service and prices, wonderful sales also. If you are staying longer than 17 days, look into a lease car with them. much cheaper than renting.

Great site, thanks for taking the time and trouble to do this.

    Alex

  2. Yes. I used them in Lisbon.

Was a really good experience. Part of Sixt. I was able to get a great rate through my regular OTA, rocked up with the details, got a brand new car, very friendly, very helpful, very good price but best of all, it seems most of their cars are new or newish.

The car was immaculate, so clean, and there was only 1 minor scratch which was recorded. I liked that they did the inspection with me before I took it from the lot.

I rented fo 3 days and could not recommend them highly enough.

At LIS their office was off-airport, 5 minutes shuttle, but they sent the Sixt shuttle very quickly. On return, I had to go to the offsite lot and they returned me to the airport in the SIXT shuttle.

Go for it folks. Very good.

  3. Do not, I repeat do not, rent a car from Sixt or Flizzr. This was who I ended up renting through when I rented through Wow Air in Iceland. I waited 2.5 hours to rent a car and an hour to *return* it. The customer service was awful. Avoid at all costs.

  4. OH MY GOD. I wish I had read trust pilot before I hired a car with Flizzr in Iceland. I actually did look for reviews on Flizzr in Iceland in general and there were none so I guess I’m the first. To say they are a disgrace is an understatement. What happened to me yesterday has never happened with a car hire company in my life and now I’m at present over €700 in debt because of Flizzr. I’m convinced it is a scam and guess what????? It’s happened to loads of other people too. I hired a car Friday. I was told there were four existing damages to the car before I took it but no one came out with me to check over the car (which is a first), I had a look over it as best I could but as it was lashing rain I didn’t look at it from every single angle possible. Howandever when I returned the car yesterday, low and behold the guy told me there was a dent in the side rear door and because it wasn’t noted in the damages (along with all the other damages that haven’t been repaired) he said I would have to pay €500!!!! to have it repaired. I had to ask him twice to show me where the dent was because I couldn’t see it. You had to stand at an angle close to the back of the car and look along the side to even spot it. There’s no way I would have spotted it on Friday because you wouldn’t even see it unless you were looking for it. I told him that there was no possible way that it happened while I had the car because we were never anywhere that could result in it happening. Well he couldn’t care less what I said. He just wanted my card to take the money. I also told him the booking was a joke from the beginning because I was charged twice for the same booking and I’m still waiting on the refund. He didn’t respond to that either. It’s quite obvious that this is a scam as I guarantee you that they charged people for the other damages on the car and never repaired them. Also one of the headlight bulbs was out when we picked up the car but we only realised about a half hour into the journey. This actually made visibility quite difficult on the Friday between the rain and the mist. It also proves the car wasn’t checked thoroughly by Flizzr. He didn’t care about that either. The amount of complaints about this company are phenomenal. I’m just so sorry I didn’t see them before booking. Everyone is right. You think you are getting value for money but then the company scam you with damages you didn’t even cause and charge you a repair fee that cost over twice what the car hire cost. I contacted them and they’re going with this “you should have checked the vehicle when you got it first and reported any damages to us”. So they want me to do the job of their incompetent staff as well? As I said YOU COULDN’T SEE THE BLOODY DENT UNLESS IT WAS POINTED OUT TO YOU, SO HOW THE HELL WOULD I HAVE SEEN IT ON FRIDAY. I am sick to my stomach over the whole thing and it has ruined an otherwise great weekend. NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL I HIRE A CAR FROM FLIZZR OR SIXT. You really do get what you pay for. Crap and incompetent service

  5. I’m in the midst of booking my Iceland trip for October and am so happy I came across this post. The Flizzr price had me wondering if it was too good to be true and this was about the only thing I could find on the company. Who did you end up booking with?

    1. Hi Claire. There were a few car hire companies in the airport arrival area but I can’t remember the names. But they were companies that we would all be quite familiar with. Other companies, like Flizzr are a short coach ride away but it took almost an hour between dropping the car back and catching the coach to the airport so we were lucky that we arrived at the car hire company early enough.

  6. FLIZZR is a scam: returned a Opel Corsa in Munich Airport in good order, no damage whatsoever. Days later they send me a bill for 218 Euros and picture of a tiny scratch on a rim. Total nonsense!

  7. One good thing about Flizzr is that rent to young drivers when other car hire companies will not. My sons user them when visiting Ireland. They book through https://www.airportcarhire.com/ as they have a special deal with them for under 23’s . For all other companies the driver will need to be over 25. However you will need to have a full licence for a minimum of 4 years.
