Is $4 For a Suite on the Second Night Still On at St. Regis Hotel Properties Worldwide?

You can supposedly stay in a suite on the second night of your stay for only four dollars at a participating St. Regis hotel property worldwide through Sunday, December 31, 2017 when you stay the first night in that same suite at the retail rate — and, for every two nights for which you pay, the second night will be priced at four United States dollars or the equivalent in local currency if you use rate plan STR1904, as consecutive reservations will be honored.

The rate of four dollars for a suite was the room rate back in 1904 when the first St. Regis hotel opened its doors, as this ongoing promotion — initially launched back in September of 2010 — is designed to celebrate the heritage of St. Regis.

You should know about a number of caveats before participating in what initially seems like an incredible bargain:

  • The retail rate is apparently the full or “rack” rate — meaning that you are likely not getting much of a bargain — and FlyerTalk members never were fooled by the marketing department of Starwood Hotels and Resorts into believing that this promotion is a deal
  • This promotion is for “select” suites at participating hotel and resort properties and not just for any suite at any hotel and resort property
  • The confirmation of your suite reservation will not reflect the discount; that adjustment will be made by staff at the hotel property when you check out — at least, hopefully they will adjust your final bill to reflect that discount
  • The rate of four dollars for a suite for the second night does not include taxes imposed by a government or any additional per room, per night charges which may not be included
  • There may be only a limited number of suites available at the rate of four dollars for the second night
  • Blackout dates and other restrictions may apply
  • This offer is not applicable to groups
  • This offer cannot be combined with other offers or promotions and is subject to change

The Biggest Caveat of This Promotion…

Just out of curiosity, I decided back in 2013 to see what the cost would be for a one-bedroom suite at The St. Regis New York if I checked in on Friday, August 9, 2013 and checked out on Sunday, August 11, 2013. The least-expensive suite I could find was $1,954.00 for that weekend, which may not be too bad for a hotel property located on Fifth Avenue at East 55 Street in New York — until you realize that the total cost of the suite for two nights could be as much as $2,537.43 when all of the taxes and fees are included.

For a similar weekend five years later, I attempted once again to see what the cost would be for a one-bedroom suite at The St. Regis New York if I checked in on Friday, August 10, 2018 and checked out on Sunday, August 12, 2018. The total cost of a Deluxe Suite — which is the least expensive suite — for two nights could be as much as $3,277.38 when all of the taxes and fees are included, which represents an increase of slightly greater than 29 percent or $739.95…

…but every time I attempted to enter rate plan STR1904, I am warned in red to enter a valid code — even though both the Internet web site itself and the terms and conditions clearly proclaim that this code is good through Sunday, December 31, 2017.

I even tried using this code at other hotel properties — such as the St. Regis San Francisco — but with no luck.

Summary

For the record, a Central Park Suite for that same weekend in August of 2018 at the Four Seasons Hotel New York will cost you $5,676.16…

…and in response to this article which I wrote pertaining to Four Seasons launching a frequent guest loyalty program in 2013, FlyerTalk member oneworld82 commented that “Please, let’s not compare FS to Waldorf-Astoria or St. Regis. This is simply another league! If anything, you can put FS, R-C, Peninsula nd MO on the same league… perhaps only, though.”

Even if I could get the rate code to work, I said it before and I will say it again: I will still pass on this offer, thank you.

Your experience with “STR1904” confirms my experience with SPG — that most times SPG rate codes don’t work online, even when I use their promo links to get to the booking page. It leads me to wonder how many discount rate codes there are that I never see when I try to book online.
