Effective as of today, May 17, 2013, jetBlue Airways has announced updates to its fees.
Changes and cancellations implemented 60 days or more prior to departure date will incur a fee of $75.00 per person.
Changes and cancellations implemented within 60 days of departure date will incur the following fees:

  • $75.00 per person fee for airfares less than $100.00 — an increase of $25.00
  • $100.00 per person fee for airfares between $100.00 and $149.99 — no increase
  • $150.00 per person fee for airfares $150.00 or more — an increase of $50.00

Customers who booked their reservation prior to May 17, 2013 will be allowed one change or cancellation at the previous fee structure: $100.00 per person, or $50.00 per person for airfares less that $100.00.
Change and cancellation fees will be waived for Mosaic elite frequent flier loyalty program members and those passengers who are on the same itinerary.
Unlike those imposed by United Airlines, US Airways, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, the increase in change fees implemented by jetBlue has yet to be met with expressions of disgust or resentment on FlyerTalk.
“As of today, Mosaic members can change reservations without a fee and cancel for full credit. Guess that was already mentioned but just got the email now. This makes it worthwhile to requalify”, FlyerTalk member sfozrhfco explains.
Concurring with sfozrhfco, FlyerTalk member sbm12 posts: “This is a significant move and puts JetBlue at the front of the pack. EVERY fare is now fully refundable flexible for their elites. That’s huge.”
FlyerTalk member bmg42000 opines: “That is still better then the UA 200$ fees but it make sense since canceling close to the flight makes it harder to resell. Good to see the mosaic customers getting more perks.”
These responses to the change fees implemented by jetBlue Airways demonstrates that it is possible to attempt to increase revenue without alienating frequent fliers. It is a shame that this is not practiced more often by commercial airlines…
