Marriott Bonvoy Reduces Elite Status Requirements and Point Redemption Rates
As an incentive for members to return to staying at its portfolio of 30 brands of greater than 7,000 hotel and resort properties worldwide after having travel halted due to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, Marriott Bonvoy has implemented updates to its frequent guest loyalty program — including lowering the rate of redeeming points at many hotel and resort properties; and extra credits are being given towards qualification for elite level status.
Marriott Bonvoy Reduces Elite Status Requirements and Point Redemption Rates
Before giving the details of the latest updates to the Marriott Bonvoy membership program, this reminder of several updates which were implemented earlier this year show which benefits have been extended so that you have ample time to experience and enjoy them:
- Elite Level Status Extension: Enjoy the elite level status which you earned in 2019 through February of 2022.
- Points Expiration: The expiration of points will be paused until February of 2021, which provides you additional time to redeem your points.
- Suite Night Awards: The expiration of your suite nights has been extended by one year, so you can use them through Friday, December 31, 2021.
- Free Night Award: Eligible Free Night Awards have now been extended to Sunday, January 31, 2021.
For Marriott Bonvoy Members Who Reside in Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan
The aforementioned benefits are for Marriott Bonvoy members who reside outside of mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan. For Marriott Bonvoy members who reside in mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan:
- Elite Level Status Extension: Members who earned elite level status in 2019 will receive an extension of their elite level status to February 2022.
- Points Expiration: Members who have been inactive for at least 24 months and have points expiring prior to Monday, February 1, 2021 will have their points expiration date automatically extended to Monday, February 1, 2021.
- Suite Night Awards: Elite Members who have Suite Night Awards — which were earned in 2019 as part of the 50-Night Annual Choice Benefit and 75-Night Annual Choice Benefit — with an expiration date of Thursday, December 31, 2020 will be extended to Friday, December 31, 2021.
- Free Night Awards: Members residing in one of the specified regions listed above with an active Free Night Award — as part of a credit card benefit, Annual Choice Benefit, Promotion or Travel Package — expiring in 2020 will be extended 12 months into 2021.
Lowest Point Redemption Rates of 2020
To help you with your exploration, greater than 5,500 hotel and resort properties around the world will be available at off-peak redemption rates for reservations which are booked between today, Monday, June 15, 2020 through Tuesday, June 30, 2020 for stay dates through Friday, July 31, 2020 — meaning that you can take advantage of the lowest redemption rates of the year in the Marriott Bonvoy frequent guest loyalty program.
50 Percent Extra Elite Night Credits
Given the disruption in your travel plans this year due to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, you will be given a head start toward earning elite level status for the year 2021 by depositing 50 percent of the Elite Night Credits into your membership account based on your 2019 earned elite status tier. Your 2019 earned elite level status has already been renewed through February of 2022, so these additional Elite Night Credits will jump-start your ability to move quickly to the next elite status tier. Once earned, these additional Elite Night Credits will be deposited in your membership account in late July of 2020.
|Elite Status Tier
Earned in 2019
|50 Percent Elite Night
|Ambassador Elite||100 Qualifying Nights AND
US$20,000.00 stay spend
|50 Elite Night Credits|
|Titanium Elite||75 Qualifying Nights||38 Elite Night Credits|
|Platinum Elite||50 Qualifying Nights||25 Elite Night Credits|
|Gold Elite||25 Qualifying Nights||13 Elite Night Credits|
|Silver Elite||10 Qualifying Nights||5 Elite Night Credits|
|Member||Not Applicable||Not Applicable|
For example, if you earned Gold elite level status in 2019, you already received an extension of Gold elite level status to February 2022. To achieve the next tier up of Platinum elite level status in 2020 to enjoy through February 2022, you will need 50 Elite Night Credits by December 31, 2020. You will receive 13 Elite Night Credits — 50 percent of the 25 normally needed to requalify for Gold — which means you will only need 37 Elite Night Credits to achieve Platinum elite level status this year.
Members of the Marriott Bonvoy frequent guest loyalty program who earned elite level status in 2019 will receive a one-time deposit of 50 percent annual Elite Night Credit requirement of the tier of that elite status level. Members who did not earn elite level status in 2019 will not receive the 50 percent Elite Night Credits deposit.
And for Marriott Bonvoy credit card members, these additional Elite Night Credits are in addition to the ones which are awarded from eligible Marriott Bonvoy credit cards you may hold.
Other Information Pertaining to Elite Level Status
Members who earned Ambassador Elite Status in 2019 and achieve 100 Elite Night Credits in 2020 are eligible to gift Platinum elite level status to one individual, e.g. friend or family member. This Platinum elite level status will continue through February 2022. These current Ambassador members will not be required to achieve the US$20,000.00 qualifying stay spend to be eligible — just the 100 Elite Night Credits. This includes the one-time deposit of 50 percent of the annual Elite Night Credit requirement — or 50 Elite Night Credits — of the elite status tier which they earned, which means current members who earned Ambassador elite level status only need 50 more Elite Night Credits this year to receive this benefit.
This is an exclusive opportunity offered for this year only to members who earned Ambassador Elite Status in 2019. E-mail invitations to those who are eligible will begin to be sent towards the end of July and will continue through Thursday, December 31, 2020 as current Ambassador Elite Members become eligible for this benefit.
Members who earned Ambassador Elite Status in 2019 must first achieve 100 Elite Night Credits this year in order to be eligible for this benefit. This includes the one-time deposit of 50 percent of the annual Elite Night Credit requirement — or 50 Elite Night Credits — of the elite status tier which they earned, which means current members who earned Ambassador elite level status only need 50 more Elite Night Credits this year to receive this benefit. If you earned Ambassador elite level status in 2020, you are not eligible for this benefit. E-mail invitations to those who are eligible will begin to be sent towards the end of July based on when current members with Ambassador elite level status become eligible for this benefit.
These policies apply to reservations which were booked through Marriott Bonvoy directly. Guests who booked via online travel agents or other third parties are advised to contact their booking provider for information on their policies and for assistance.
The updates which were announced earlier today for the Marriott Bonvoy frequent guest loyalty program seem similar to those which were announced for the IHG Rewards Club membership program back in April of 2020.
The team members of Marriott International, Incorporated seem to be doing whatever they can to provide maximum flexibility to you and other customers — as well as members of the Marriott Bonvoy frequent guest loyalty program…
…but is all of this enough to retain your loyalty to the Marriott Bonvoy membership program?
