More Points Needed for Hilton Honors Rewards June 2019?

“Some time in the last few days, without warning or notice, Hilton raised the maximum points price of many hotel rooms by 10,000 points per night. After examining prices in several cities, I have concluded that this is the biggest overall devaluation since Hilton introduced dynamic pricing in early 2017. There is a new maximum price of 90,000 points for some hotel rooms that used to be 80,000, and Hilton also reduced the value of points towards standard rooms that cost less than the hotel maximum points by about 5% nearly across the board for the third time since introducing dynamic pricing. I am sick of this behavior. Marriott has mistreated its customers in many ways since October, but at least it gives warning to its customers before decreasing the stored value of their rewards by 5 to 20% overnight.”

More Points Needed for Hilton Honors Rewards June 2019?

The paragraph you just read was posted in this discussion by FlyerTalk member xyc, who alleges that another devaluation of the Hilton Honors program was implemented without notice or warning in the form of increased points required to redeem for Hilton Honors awards — and other FlyerTalk members have been reporting similar experiences.

I decided to investigate this claim further, starting with Hilton La Romana, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort for three nights — checking in on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 and checking out on Friday, July 12, 2019 — and found that the number of Hilton Honors points which I would need to redeem per night for a standard room reward is 36,000 points, which seems reasonable to me…

…but when I clicked on the green Continue button, the price inexplicably jumped to a minimum of 45,000 Hilton Honors points per night for that same standard reward.

Similar results occurred with many other dates as well.

Next, I decided to check on hotel properties worldwide which require as few as 5,000 Hilton Honors points per night; and found that the number of hotel properties has been reduced from 27 to 23 hotel properties, which is four fewer in June of 2019 than four months ago — and the redemption for reward stays at those four hotel properties doubled to 10,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

I then checked on hotel properties worldwide which require as few as 10,000 Hilton Honors points per night; and found that the number of hotel properties has been increased from 150 to 157 hotel properties, which is seven more in June of 2019 than four months ago. As was just mentioned, four of those seven hotel properties originally cost only 5,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Those results — which were derived from using the PointsExplorer tool from Hilton Honors and about which I intend to post updated articles — indicated to me that the hotel and resort properties which offered reward stays for lower point redemption rates were largely unaffected.

Still, that does not ignore what FlyerTalk members see as a recent trend of an increase in the amount of points needed to redeem for awards stays in a number of the hotel and resort properties of the mid-price to higher-price ranges.

Summary

One of the many significant changes which were implemented to the entire Hilton Honors program back in 2017 was the elimination of reward charts, which generally meant that any increases in the redemption of points for reward stays no longer required a formal announcement…

…but does that render any unannounced increases in point redemptions for award nights at an undetermined number of hotel and resort properties any less nefarious?

I am not sure, actually, as I assumed — perhaps incorrectly — that point redemptions for reward nights in the Hilton Honors frequent guest loyalty program became dynamic rather than fixed with the elimination of reward charts; and that meant the possibility of fewer points for reward stays as well as more points…

…but I also assumed that more increases than decreases in the amount of points to be redeemed for reward stays would occur, which is probably the case.

The one thing which concerns me more is the aforementioned example I demonstrated with Hilton La Romana, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort, which may be nothing more than a technical issue — I have not yet determined whether this glitch is occurring with other hotel and resort properties which participate in Hilton Honors — but it needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

Given that the PointsExplorer hasn’t been updated with the new maximums yet, using it to drive your conclusions in this post is utterly useless.
