In order to align the frequent flier loyalty programs of Emirates and Qantas, a Platinum elite tier has been officially announced and will be introduced into the Emirates Skywards frequent flier loyalty program effective as of April 1, 2013.
In order to qualify for the new Platinum elite level status — the new highest elite tier of the Emirates Skywards frequent flier loyalty program — you must earn 150,000 tier qualification miles within a year. Benefits and perks include the following:

  • First Class check-in and baggage delivery
  • Access for yourself and a guest to the Emirates First Class lounge at Dubai International Airport and to the network of Emirates lounges worldwide
  • 75 percent bonus Skywards frequent flier loyalty program miles when you fly with Emirates
  • A guaranteed revenue seat in the Business Class cabin
  • Gold ‘Partner’ Card for a spouse or partner
  • ‘Last Seat’ Flex reward tickets even on high-demand flights

If you earned 150,000 tier miles in the past 12 or 13 months, you will automatically be upgraded to Platinum elite tier membership — but because the Platinum elite tier is being launched on April 1, 2013, entry into the Platinum tier at that point will be based on the number of tier qualification miles earned between March 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
FlyerTalk members are mixed about their thoughts over the addition of a Platinum elite tier. While some FlyerTalk members believe that the addition of a Platinum elite tier is fair — and, of course, those FlyerTalk members who qualified for the Platinum elite tier and have received their welcome notices are indeed excited about the coming year — others use words like uninventive, rubbish and boring, thinking that 150,000 tier qualification miles is too steep, portending that qualification requirements for the Gold level tier may eventually increase — and Silver level tier members may see a potential devaluation of their benefits as well.
It remains to be seen just what effect the new Platinum elite tier will have on the Emirates Skywards frequent flier loyalty program and its members — but FlyerTalk members report that Qantas has dramatically reduced baggage allowances for its Frequent Flyer loyalty program members…

It’s about time. EK has plenty of Premium passengers paying high fares (more then I’ve seen on most other airlines). When you can earn Gold with 1 or 2 tickets, there was no incentive for those that fly the F & J cabins regularly. Now there finally is. Great job EK, people have been asking for this since Skywards started 12-13 years ago
