New York to Enact Random Checkpoints Throughout the City

To comply with the travel restrictions of the state of New York pertaining to the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, the city of New York is enacting random checkpoints throughout the city in order to catch any individual — regardless of whether the individual is staying in the city or simply passing through; and this includes legal residents of the city of New York who have traveled to those other states — who has spent greater than 24 hours in any of the 34 states and Puerto Rico which is on the restricted list of the state of New York within the last 14 days.

New York to Enact Random Checkpoints Throughout the City

The specific locations of exactly where the checkpoints will be located — as well as whether they will remain in static locations versus being moved to different locations around the city — have not been publicly revealed at the time this article was written.

State law in New York requires anyone entering the state who has spent greater than 24 hours in any state on the aforementioned restricted list to:

  1. Register by completing the New York State Traveler Health Form.
  2. Quarantine — that is, remain in your home or the place you are staying except for emergencies, to seek medical care, or to leave the state — upon arrival for 14 days from the last day of travel within a state on the restricted list.
  3. Essential workers coming to work in New York from a restricted state must follow the guidance of the Department of Health of the State of New York.

In addition to Puerto Rico, the 34 states which are currently included on the restricted list at the time this article was written are:

At the checkpoints — where each person who is stopped is expected to spend only a couple of minutes of his or her time:

  1. Individuals will be asked whether they have spent more than 24 hours in any State on New York’s Restricted State list in the last 14 days.
  2. If yes, the individual will be required to complete a New York State Traveler Health Form. The form is available online and can be filled out at the earliest, one day before arrival in New York City, or at the checkpoint. The registration form takes fewer than five minutes to complete; and the individual can avoid that delay by filling out the form online at the earliest, one day before he or she arrives in the city of New York. You should take a screenshot of the confirmation page as proof that you have indeed completed the form.

“These checkpoints are an educational tool designed to ensure travelers understand and comply with New York State’s travel restrictions. Through enormous sacrifice and perseverance, New York City has reduced COVID-19 transmission and positive test rates to among the lowest in the country. We cannot afford to let our guard down now”, according to this official list of frequently asked questions.

As for any individual who does not comply with the law of the state of New York and fails to quarantine or register, “We know that everyone will cooperate in the interest of public health and slowing the spread of COVID-19. However, for truly exceptional cases of noncompliance, pursuant to State law, individuals may be subject to significant fines.”

When one thinks of a sheriff, the first thing which usually comes to mind is the wild west, as the main lawman struts out as he kicks up clouds of dirt while walking the unpaved main street of a small town to round up that them there varmints…

…but that the city of New York has a sheriff is a surprising fact which few people seem to know — and you can find out what are some of the functions of the office of the sheriff of the city of New York, which has been in existence since 1626, when it was established while the Dutch were in control…

…and the current office of the sheriff of the city of New York was formed when the office of the sheriff of all five boroughs were consolidated on January 1, 1942. The office of the sheriff even has its own official Twitter account.

  1. So a police officer is going to conduct a traffic stop without witnessing you commit a traffic violation or having an articulable belief that you’ve committed a crime. Then unlawfully detain you, violate the Privileges and Immunities Clause and Article 13 of the International Bill of Human Rights. Then you’re expect to assist the officer in violating your 4th and 5th amendment rights. Got it.

  2. I grew up in NY but to hear how NY really thinks they can control who enters is so funny. NY is a huge state has to be at least 50 or more roads, multiple air & sea ports that enter NY and its surrounded by Canada and 6-7 other US states which are not included on the quarantine list. Even if they put a check point at every road entering the state are they going to hold up huge lines of traffic to ask every person if they were in any of the off limit states? Who would ever say yes so they can be held up even longer to fill out forms and told they must quarantine or we will arrest/fine you 🙂 its much easier & faster to say no I live in NY or I’m just coming over from NJ, PA, etc… If you say yes or no are they going to ask you to prove it it either way? Of course not its just a scout honor thing so funny they are even making an attempt to enforce it, I understand the reason for it but logically its an impossible task. NY is not HI where all travelers that arrive to Hawaii through a highly control boarder receive an actual quarantine order they sign so its enforceable when they catch you breaking it and easily fine and/or arrest you. NY is trying to be a HI but its an impossible task, but good luck trying 🙂

Note that in Seattle protesters are suing the city of Seattle for violating protesters’ constitutional by the police department’s “indiscriminate” use of chemical and less-lethal crowd control tactics, which have forced demonstrators to buy “expensive” protective gear in order to safely bring their message against police brutality to the streets.

    It is only a matter of time before New York City is sued for violating the constitutional rights of out-of-state protesters who want to attend spontaneous protests in the city.

  5. ACAB. I wish more of my fellow conservatives realized that the police are just as bad as the thugs that run around destroying neighborhoods and the protesters that vandalize, loot, riot, and block traffic. Cops blindly enforce liberal laws and orders of liberal politicians. They are very dangerous and are the first ones who enforce liberal gun control, the evil war on drugs that says you don’t own your own body, they terrorize motorists for,not,wearing a seat belt (again, saying you don’t own your own body), they arrest people for visiting friends and family on private property during coronavirus, and they would enforce any laws that criminalizes speech like in Europe.

    Any cops who enforces these type of checkpoints are evil. Instead of having cops arrest illegals and stop dangerous rioters, cops stop people for a cold or flu. Wonderful.

They would be way more effective if they put efforts to enforce 100% mask policy protecting everyone regardless of their travel history rather then trying to weed out a few individuals who may or may not spent anytime in a select handful of states. Its impossible to know this info unless they honestly disclose it and willing to be harassed with restrictions that come with it. Its like trying to investigate a murder suspect history takes to much time, effort & resources they rarely say yes I did it put me in jail, they just say not me and let someone else find evidence and prove them wrong.
