One Example of the Dichotomy of We Are All In This Together: American Airlines

On the same day which American Airlines released a touching video which proclaims that “You Are Why We Fly”, checked baggage fees for transatlantic flights between North America, Central America or South America and Europe increased by 25 percent from $60.00 to $75.00 on basic economy fares.

The official video from American Airlines was released today, Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

Meanwhile, checked baggage fees for transatlantic flights increased on the same day — today, Tuesday, April 21, 2020 — that the aforementioned video was released, with the exact verbiage here: “For Transatlantic Basic Economy travel, a $60 1st bag fee applies for tickets issued on / or before April 20, 2020, and $75 for tickets issued on / after April 21, 2020.”

Summary

Could the timing of the increase of checked baggage fees be any poorer, with the release of the video and the substantial negative impact the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic has already had on the commercial aviation industry worldwide?

To me, both actions from American Airlines send a mixed message — but that message is not obvious in that it does not exactly scream out to me that “You Are Why We Fly” or that “We are all in this together.”
