Photographs: The Great Rift Valley From Above in Kenya

s we were driving north on highway B3 — which is one of the main roads out of Nairobi which eventually turns east after passing through the town of Mai Mahiu while on our way towards Masai Mara National Reserve — the downgrade of the road could be felt as the van curved through the trees…

…and then suddenly, the trees opened up to this panoramic view of a valley which resembled the American west — the Great Rift Valley…

It was the Great Rift Valley, which supposedly covers greater than 9,500 kilometers from the Middle East to southeastern Africa.

The three white dots you see on the right side of the photograph are satellite dishes. We would eventually pass them on the way to Masai Mara National Reserve after turning left in Narok and continuing on highway B3. Photograph ©2015 by Brian Cohen.

Proprietors of stalls attempt to sell you everything from animal skins and furs to crafts to food and drinks. We did stop along the way; but I did not purchase anything.

Once the van passed through the town of Mai Mahiu, it turned left to remain on highway B3 heading west through the Great Rift Valley…
