A list of 217 hotel and resort properties whose World of Hyatt point redemption amounts are increasing or decreasing — effective as of Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time — has been released; a new award chart debuts; and combining Points + Cash requires 50 percent of the points required for a free night and 50 percent of the chosen room rate.

Notes

All free night award redemptions booked before Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, will follow the current Award Chart. For example, if you book an award night prior to Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, for a stay that occurs on March 21 or after, the current Award Chart will apply. Any free night award redemptions booked at Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, or after will follow the new Award Chart.

All Hyatt Category 1-4 free night awards booked before Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, will follow the current Award Chart. For example, if you book a category 1-4 free night award night prior to Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, for a stay that occurs on March 22, 2020, or after the current Award Chart will apply. Any Category 1-4 free night award redemption booked at Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, or after will follow the new Award Chart.

Any Free Night Award booked prior to Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, at a property that is shifting to a higher category and will require more points will not be affected. Reservations will remain in place at the originally booked point level. For example, a Free Night Award booked at a Category 1 hotel for 5,000 points before Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, that is moving to a Category 2 hotel for 8,000 points will remain at 5,000 points.

Any Free Night or Points & Cash Award booked prior to Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, for nights on or after March 22, 2020, at a property that is shifting to a lower category and will require fewer points will receive an adjustment. World of Hyatt Customer Service will proactively deposit the point difference into a member’s account starting on March 22, 2020. If the reservation that received an adjustment is canceled, the points originally deducted for the award reservation will be returned to the members account and the adjusted points will be removed from the member’s account. For example, a member with a Free Night Award booked before Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, for a Category 2 hotel for 8,000 points that is moving to a Category 1 hotel that requires 5,000 points on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, will receive 3,000 points returned to his/her account. If the member cancels this Free Night Award, 8,000 points will be returned to the members account and 3,000 points will be deducted.

Any modifications made to reservations on or after Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time, will follow the terms of the new Award Chart. Any modifications to Category 1-4 Award Night reservations that cause an award to be reissued cannot be redeemed for hotels that moved above Category 4 as part of these changes.

Free Night point requirements are not changing for all-inclusive resorts and for Miraval Resorts.

New Off-Peak and Peak Redemption Rates 2020 For World of Hyatt Award Chart

The current point redemption values for each free night award category through Saturday, March 21, 2020 are as follows:

Hotel Category Standard Room Points Per Night Regency/Grand Club Points Per Night Standard Suite
Points Per Night
Premium Suite Points Per Night
1 5,000 7,000 8,000 10,000
2 8,000 12,000 13,000 16,000
3 12,000 17,000 20,000 24,000
4 15,000 21,000 24,000 30,000
5 20,000 27,000 32,000 40,000
6 25,000 33,000 40,000 50,000
7 30,000 39,000 48,000 60,000
8 40,000

New off-peak and peak redemption rates will be added to the World of Hyatt award chart effective as of Sunday, March 22, 2020 for greater than 1,000 hotel and resort properties worldwide; and the standard redemption rates in the current award chart remain.

If you have an upcoming redemption stay, the standard rate still applies. If you need to change your reservation after the new redemption rates become effective as of March of 2020, you will receive the available redemption rate when you rebook your reservation…

…and if you have already booked an existing award reservation which drops to off-peak in March of 2020, you will get an automatic one-time refund of the difference in the number of points which are redeemed for your award.

In the new award charts for the redemption of World of Hyatt points which are presented later in this article, the percentage column applies for both off-peak and peak redemption of World of Hyatt points when compared to the standard redemption of World of Hyatt points: for example, 12,000 points for an off-peak award night at a Category 4 hotel property is a 20 percent discount when compared to 15,000 points for a standard award night; while 15,000 points for a peak award night at a Category 3 hotel property is a 25 percent premium when compared to 12,000 points for a standard award night.

Put another way, the best value is for off-peak award nights at Category 1 hotel properties, with which you will save 30 percent on the number of points redeemed versus the standard award night; while at 12.50 percent on the number of points redeemed, the lowest premium for peak award nights applies to Category 8 hotel properties versus the standard award night.

Redemption rates for award nights will be announced as soon as nights are available for reservations — usually 13 months in advance — and will not change once they are posted. Additionally, a new calendar — which is coming soon — will help you plan the redemption of your World of Hyatt points for your award.

Enjoy free nights in standard rooms at Hyatt hotel and resort properties — with no blackout dates — and participating Small Luxury Hotels of the World or at participating M life Rewards destinations.

The current award chart shows that you can only redeem points for Standard Room points per night at Category 8 hotel and resort properties. The new award charts introduce the point redemption amounts per night for Category 8 hotel and resort properties for Regency/Grand Club, Standard Suite, and Premium Suite awards.

Dining, Spa and More Awards to Provide More Value For Your Points

Not much may have been said about the new redemption rates because they are not in effect yet; but one thing is for certain: aspirational hotel and resort properties will certainly be more expensive during peak periods; and those Hyatt Place hotel properties in East Squeedonk, Idaho or Moron, North Dakota will only cost you 3,500 World of Hyatt points per night in January…

…but exactly when peak periods and off-peak periods occur will depend on each individual hotel or resort property; and you will not know for certain unless you invest time and effort into doing the research yourself for your future stay.

Welcome to another entrant in the world of dynamic pricing, as illustrated by past articles written by me and posted here at The Gate — and expect other frequent travel loyalty programs to follow suit in their typical lemming style:

Summary

A total of 217 hotel and resort properties worldwide are affected by the changes in point redemption: 117 hotel and resort properties will move to a higher award category with which free night award redemptions will require additional World of Hyatt points; while 100 hotel and resort properties will move to a lower award category with which free night award redemptions at these hotel and resort properties will require fewer World of Hyatt points.

The good news is that at least no new categories have been added; and the points required for each category will remain the same — although ten hotel and resort properties in Europe and three hotel and resort properties in Asia are moving into Category 8 with this change.

World of Hyatt performs an audit every year of the number of points required to redeem a free night and Points + Cash at each hotel or resort property. The award category of a hotel or resort property may be adjusted based on the current market conditions.

If you intend on redeeming points at a hotel or resort property at which an increase will occur, do so as soon as possible prior to Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 8:00 in the morning Central Daylight Time.

Keep in mind that:

  • When you book before March 22, your reservations will follow the current free night award chart found here.
  • Reservations made on or after March 22 will follow the new free night award chart and incorporate the updates noted below
  • Existing reservations for nights on or after March 22 will receive a refund for the point difference if the hotel moved to a lower category
