Why Marriott Sets a Bad Example With This Sale

One reason why Marriott sets a bad example with this sale is because no expiration date is visible in either the official Internet web site of this offer or in the terms and conditions; so when this promotion ends — if it does end — is uncertain.

Also, only one hotel property offers the discount of 30 percent. The remainder of the hotel and resort properties only offer between a discount of between ten percent and 20 percent.

More importantly, one does not find out about the fact that full payment of the stay is required at the time of booking the reservation and that — with few exceptions — the reservation cannot be refunded or modified, which is similar to how resort fees are hidden within the official Internet web sites of hotel and resort properties which charge them. These stipulations should be clearly stated within the terms and conditions of this offer.

The majority of the aforementioned discounts are similar to those of typical advance rates with which payment is required in advance and cannot be refunded once reservations are booked — but the odd difference with this offer is that you can apparently still cancel your reservation without penalty when the cancellation occurs within a day after booking your reservation, which is similar to what airlines based in the United States offer when you purchase a ticket for a flight.

Using The Westin Tokyo as an example, I attempted a reservation for one night with which I would check in to the hotel property on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 and check out of the hotel property on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.

The rate for a deluxe city view guest room with a king bed is ¥43,200 for the night; and the description of the rate is an “Advance Purchase rate, prepay in full, non-refundable if cancelled more than 1 day after booking, no changes” — along with rate details, on which I clicked…

…and the text for canceling your reservation states that “Changes to your reservation are not permitted. Please note that you may cancel your reservation for no charge until February 2, 2019. Please note that your prepayment for this special rate is non-refundable.”

Select Terms and Conditions

Limited number of rooms are available for this promotion. Rates are per room, per night; and based on availability at the time of reservations.

Rates and discounts not available during special events. This offer is not available to groups of ten or more rooms. Tax is additional and rates may not be combined with any other promotion, offer or discount. Room rate does not apply to meeting rooms. Blackout dates may apply and advance reservations are required.

Other restrictions, terms and conditions — including those of the Marriott Rewards frequent guest loyalty program and those of individual hotel and resort properties — may apply.

Summary

As I already mentioned, the aforementioned stipulations should be clearly stated within the terms and conditions of this offer, which to me questions the integrity of the company. That they are not mentioned until the reservation booking process is reminiscent of how some hotel and resort properties do not reveal resort fees until a potential customer has already started the reservation booking process. Marriott International, Incorporated needs to rethink this policy, in my opinion.

This promotion is a tepid opportunity for you to save up to 30 percent on regular room rates at the aforementioned resort properties — but definitely shop around first to ensure that you are securing the deal with the best value for your money before you decide to tie up funds booking your reservations with this sale, with which the hotel and resort properties enjoy the use of your money.

THANK YOU for calling this out! I was trying to book rooms for Japan in Apr, but this sale was a complete waste of time when I compare side by side the “discounted rate” was exactly the same price on the advance purchase rate. I think I’ll stick to Hilton.. They have a sale running now, ends tomorrow.
