Several Rental Car Companies Waive Young Adult Fees Due to 2019 Novel Coronavirus

The fees which are typically imposed on adults who are younger than the age of 25 have been temporarily suspended by several rental car companies as a result of the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus — which is also known as COVID-19 or 2019-nCoV — pandemic.

Many campuses of universities and colleges around the United States have essentially closed for the remainder of the spring semester of 2020 — and students are being forced to leave…

…but students who do not either own a vehicle, know someone to pick them up, or have ready access to public transportation are basically stuck and have no way to leave.

Even worse is that many of those students are required to evacuate the campuses with all of their belongings — which may necessitate the use of a vehicle which is large enough to haul them.

Several rental car companies have offered those students the option of renting a vehicle without having to pay up to $30.00 extra per day to do so solely because of their ages, as the fees for young adults to rent a vehicle have been waived — which lowers the minimum age of who is qualified to rent a vehicle.

Worse is that although states such as New York and Michigan allow drivers 18 years of age and older to rent a car may be required to pay more expensive fees which could be greater than $50.00 per day.

The following is a list of rental car companies which have waived the young renter fees for students up to 24 years of age of colleges and universities that have closed for the remainder of the spring semester of 2020 — and keep in mind that for all offers, all other standard driver and credit requirements apply.

In addition to the deals which Hertz offers to students in Europe, other special offers from Hertz may also apply to students and young adult customers.

The minimum age for renters of Fox Rent a Car is 19 years old, which gives many young drivers the chance to rent a car when they might not be able to do so otherwise.

“It’s possible to avoid the young renter fee if you’re a member of certain organizations. Hertz waives the young renter fee for AAA members, and USAA members can get young driver fees waived at Hertz, Avis and Budget”, according to this article written by Kristen for AutoSlash. “Alamo offers discounts through Student Advantage, which provides promotional prices to students for retail, movies, car-sharing services and more. You can also browse its general deals page to see which promotions are available at any given time.”

As I first reported in this article on Saturday, June 5, 2010 — AutoSlash was founded ten years ago by three members of FlyerTalk to help customers secure the lowest rates on car rentals by searching multiple vendors, tracking rental rates, and applying coupons and discounts in a process which it has virtually automated; and it has saved countless people thousands of dollars in rental car rates since its launch.

“Another option to a full-day rental is a car-sharing service, which allows you to rent a vehicle by the hour instead of a full day”, according to the aforementioned article from AutoSlash. “If you just need a car for just a few hours, Enterprise Car Share is a good bet. It has locations on college campuses across the U.S., and is open to students 18 or older who need to leave campus for errands or activities. Car insurance is included.”

Additionally, Zipcar offers its services at more than 600 campuses of universities and colleges.

Summary

At the time this article was written, neither Thrifty Car Rental — through which renters as young as 20 years of age may rent a vehicle — nor National Car Rental nor Sixt offer any waiver of young renter fees or student discounts.

Keep in mind that because of the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, some locations of facilities may be open limited hours per day or be closed altogether until further notice.

Also, remember not to return your vehicle after hours when you are finished, as the rental period may continue until the next time the facility is open, which could be days — and you will likely be charged for them.
