Southwest Airlines Actually Posted a LOSS!

Will the sun now rise in the west? Are blizzards finally coming to Aruba?

Although Southwest Airlines says that its streak of profitable quarters remains alive at 70, it officially posted a loss yesterday for the first time in almost 18 years for the third quarter of 2008.

The approximately $120,000,000.00 loss was fueled by accounting charges related to its fuel-hedging program.

Before you speculate on whether this means that the low-cost carrier model of airline operations is in jeopardy, you would first be best advised to read the Southwest Airlines loses $120M in 3Q on fuel charge thread for details, facts and opinions.
