Stupid Tip of the Day: Raising an Armrest on the Aisle

Many people believe that the armrest on the seat in the economy class cabin adjacent to the aisle is rigid and cannot be moved — yet there are reasons why someone seated in the aisle seat would want that armrest raised: for greater ease of sitting in the seat; or perhaps for some extra room when standing up is not an option at the moment.

Stupid Tip of the Day: Raising an Armrest on the Aisle

Many airplane models are equipped with seats with which the armrest adjacent to the aisle can be raised — but unlike the ones elsewhere, the button which you must press to raise that armrest is hidden and not in an obvious location.

The photographs used in this article pertain to an aisle seat aboard a Boeing 757-200(G) aircraft — this was the airplane on which I was passenger on my way from New York to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland — and as you can see, the button is located under and near the rear of the armrest. The location of this button may vary slightly in different models of airplanes.

Perhaps this article does not exactly qualify as a part of the Stupid Tip of the Day series which highlights travel topics that are so obvious that one automatically thinks that everybody must already know the topic — but at least if you are seated in the aisle seat in the economy class cabin aboard an airplane and need some extra room, you now know what to do to raise that seemingly stubborn armrest.

Not all arm rests can be raised, and there are various buttons for those that can, some are like in the pics you posted others are a dohicky at the end of the rest when the plastic ends and theres a sort of space.

also bear in mind that the rest is suppose to be down for take-offs and landings as well as bad turbluence

      You are absolutely correct, isaac.

      Thank you.

what would be nice is a trick to raise the armrest at the window side of the plane!
