Subway Fares in Buenos Aires to More Than Double — Tomorrow

Wooden interior of vintage La Brugeoise car on the A line in the Buenos Aires subte.

Fares on the subway system in Buenos Aires — also known as the subte — will jump greater than 125 percent starting tomorrow, January 6, 2012, as they will rise from $1,10 to $2,50 pesos.
Passengers who hold a pre-paid magnetic card will still pay $1,10 pesos until January 12, 2012.
There are six lines on the subte, and I had the pleasure several years ago of riding in one of the vintage cars on the A line with the wooden trim and incandescent lights. The doors do not open automatically — you have to open them yourself when you want to enter and exit the car. These cars — known as La Brugeoise cars — have been in continuous service for almost 100 years and are thought to be the oldest subway cars in the world still in service.
It was truly a treat for me. Even at $2,50 pesos, it is worth experiencing it at least once.
