Seemingly simply silly springtime snow.

I want to say that the morning was in the dead of winter in Estonia — I really do — when I woke up in the large warm suite in Tallinn, which is the capital city of the country; but the calendar reminded me that the time of year was the middle of April and therefore the season was officially spring for at least three weeks.

I watched as the clouds quickly sprinted overhead as the snow fell from the sky in what I can only describe as heavy wisps, as steam and smoke from tall narrow chimneys reached up to meet the frozen precipitation…

…and although some snow did manage to cover the ground with a light blanket of white, the clouds suddenly gave way to cerulean skies — which did not abate the cold air much; but the day turned out to be much nicer than the inclement weather of the morning which threatened to ruin it.

Final Boarding Call

Despite my travels being in the month of April, that cold weather and snow followed me southward from Finland and into Estonia, through Latvia and Lithuania — where I dined on a satisfyingly hot sauerkraut soup in a dense bread bowl — and into Belarus before a rainbow finally greeted me in Poland. I just could not escape the effects of winter until the very last couple of days of my trip in Eastern Europe before heading back to the United States.
