Sunday Morning Photograph November 21 2021: Cows in Uruguay.

Cute...or dinner? A lot at steak is riding on the answer to this question...

As I was driving along the Ruta Interbalnearia — which is the main national road of Uruguay that stretches approximately 134 kilometers between Montevideo and Punta del Este roughly parallel to the southern coast of the country — I spotted some cows in a pasture along the side of the somewhat limited access highway and decided to stop to take some photographs.

Like its neighboring country of Argentina, Uruguay has some of the best beef in the world — as well as some great seafood thanks to its coastline along the Rio de la Plata and the southern Atlantic Ocean — and when I stepped out of the rental car, the cows all curiously and quizzically looked at me from their grassy pasture.

I wondered if they knew of their almost certain fate of eventually winding up on the dinner plates of tables — giving milk along the way for some great dairy products, such as real fresh cream for ice cream — or perhaps they were simply waiting for someone to moo at them.

Final Boarding Call

I just did not have the heart to tell them what might happen to them — especially as I had dined on some udderly delicious steak while I was in Uruguay; and that is no bull…

…so I simply got back into the car and drove away, attempting to avoid the pedestrians and animals — as well as unsupervised children playing with their toys and bicycles — who unabashedly treated the Ruta Interbalnearia highway as though it was their own personal sidewalk or playground while seemingly oblivious to the occasional vehicle which sped by them.
