The Battery Atlanta: New Lifestyle Destination and Hotel — Coming in 2017

“T he Battery will be the South’s preeminent lifestyle destination. Building upon the rich history of the Atlanta Braves and anchored by their new home – SunTrust Park – it will deliver a new standard of living that will be continually evolving and powered by you!”

That is the proclamation at the official Internet web site of The Battery Atlanta“bat” referring to the arrival of the Atlanta Braves professional baseball team to the new stadium currently being built in Cobb County and partially subsidized by taxpayers in the county to the tune of $300 million — which is the new mixed-use development of approximately 60 acres currently under construction and expected to open to the public in 2017.

A video of slightly greater than four minutes shows what the site is expected to look like when it is completed — but be certain to mute the sound of the video, as the music is annoying and repetitive and the audio has no dialogue.

Included in this development will be a new hotel property — originally to be known as the The Omni Atlanta Northwest Hotel but now expected to be known as the Omni Hotel at SunTrust Park — which will include 12,500 square feet of meeting space, a signature restaurant, an elevated pool deck and bar overlooking the plaza and ballpark.

The Roxy is a music venue expected to return to the Atlanta area. Greater than 400,000 square feet of retail and office space; greater than 550 modern residences; and an assortment of restaurants “featuring some of Atlanta’s most acclaimed chefs and a diverse blend of culinary options” are also expected to be part of this development. Those restaurants purportedly include Antico Pizza; Cru Food and Wine Bar; Tomahawk Taproom featuring Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q; Superica; and a steak house concept with chef Linton Hopkins.

I have no doubt that Delta Air Lines will pay handsomely — think seven figures per year — to continue to be the official airline of the Atlanta Braves.

Photographs of the site under construction were taken by me earlier this year from an office building across Interstate 285.

I am not convinced at this time that this development will be a rousing success — it seems to be overhyped to me at the moment — but only time will tell…

  1. I lived in Cobb County for 15 years. Then I moved to Midtown and saw the reality of Cobb from the other side. It’s White Flight, pure and simple. The people who live there delude themselves, but there’s a reason that the MARTA train lines were never routed there. I’m sure the whole enterprise will be very successful at vacuuming the wallets, and folks in Cobb do have more in their wallets.

    1. While I enjoy watching professional sports once in a while, Vicente — I watched on television the last few innings of the second playoff game between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets last night — I just do not understand how people allow professional sports organizations to “vacuum” their wallets no matter what is the state of the economy or their financial situations in general…

…but I have to agree with you that the whole enterprise will indeed be very successful at doing just that.
