Tipping the Hotel Maid: Yes or No?

It is not fair to harm or hurt the maid in any way by tipping her, but —

…oh, wait — that is tipping as in leaving a gratuity

…anyway, when you stay at a hotel property, do you ask Should I tip the maid? [Merged threads]

Some FlyerTalk members see no point in leaving a tip at all, citing that they expect the room to be cleaned and serviced and should be part of the room rate. Others say that they will leave a tip only if they receive excellent service, and still others leave a tip all the time regardless of the quality of service. Then, for those who tip, there is the debate of how much to leave, when to leave it, where to leave it and how often one should leave the gratuity.

The classic debate regarding leaving gratuities for domestic help has long been a heated topic on FlyerTalk and shows no sign of abating anytime soon…
