Travel Alert April 2018: Airport Strikes in Germany

If you are traveling to, from or through Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, and Bremen in Germany, be aware that workers at those airports intend to be on strike between now at 6:00 in the evening today, Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

As a result, Lufthansa has been forced to cancel approximately 1,000 of its 1,600 daily flights.

“The Union is obviously using this as an extortion tactic ahead of negotiations scheduled to take place on April 15 and 16”, according to this article at Lufthansa Flyer. “I suspect they’ll call additional strikes after tomorrow ahead of their talks. The Ver.di union is looking for a 6% raise for most public sector employees and they chose airport operations as their poster child for their latest tantrum.”

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to, from or within Germany, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this winter weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of the affected areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.

Here are three airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:

  • American Airlines has issued travel alerts for Frankfurt and Munich for Monday, April 9, 2018 through Tuesday, April 10, 2018; and Friday, April 13, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • United Airlines has issued travel alerts for Frankfurt and Munich for Monday, April 9, 2018 through Tuesday, April 10, 2018; and Friday, April 13, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Lufthansa has issued travel alerts for Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Bremen for Tuesday, April 10, 2018; and Tuesday, April 17, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
