Travel Alert August 2019: Airplane Crash at Santa Barbara Airport

Due to the fiery crash of a Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft — of which all seven occupants survived — at Santa Barbara Airport at 10:13 in the evening of Sunday, August 25, 2019, at least two airlines have issued travel waivers for passengers who were inconvenienced by the unfortunate incident.

Travel Alert August 2019: Airplane Crash at Santa Barbara Airport

The airplane had flown from Hawaii to Santa Maria on its way to Phoenix before crash-landing due to a fuel leak with its hydraulic system and the loss of an engine.

All flights to and from the airport were subsequently cancelled and the airport was closed on Monday, August 26, 2019 while investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States were on site.

Even as of this morning as the airport had reopened for operations, hundreds of passengers began their day finding other transportation alternatives to either depart from or arrive at Santa Barbara Airport. One of the reasons why operations have been slow to return to normal is because the crash also took out signage and runway lights.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If your flight was delayed or canceled as a result of the airplane crash, you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary, as two airlines have issued travel alerts:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Santa Barbara for Monday, August 26, 2019 through Tuesday, August 27, 2019; and Saturday, August 31, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Delta Air Lines has issued a travel alert for Santa Barbara for Monday, August 26, 2019 through Tuesday, August 27, 2019; and Saturday, August 31, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Summary

If you were affected by this incident at Santa Barbara Airport, ensure that you are able to alter your travel plans without penalty. If the airline on which you are traveling as a passenger is not included in the aforementioned list, contact a representative to assist you.
