Travel Alert December 2020: Major Winter Storm to Impact Northeastern United States

If the northeastern United States is in your travel plans over the next few days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to a major winter storm.

Travel Alert December 2020: Major Winter Storm to Impact Northeastern United States

An area of low pressure — which is currently developing under an upper trough over Texas — is forecast to track across the East Coast and evolve into a significant winter storm. Winter storm warnings are currently in effect in counties from northwestern North Carolina to northeastern Massachusetts; while winter storm watches and winter weather advisories are in effect in counties from northeastern Georgia all the way to southeastern Maine.

Up to 30 inches of snow can potentially accumulate in northeastern Pennsylvania — including Scranton, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Wilkes-Barre.

Cities such as Providence, Hartford, and White Plains can expect up to 18 inches of snow; while an accumulation of up to one foot of snow can occur in such cities as New York, Bridgeport, Boston, Albany, New Haven, Cape Cod, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Worcester, Newark, and Manchester.

Electric power outages could occur from the DelMarVa peninsula all the way to the southern tip of Maine — with the likeliest areas along a narrow swath from northeastern New Jersey to southeastern Massachusetts — which can result in significant disruptions for those who either work from home or are schooled at home.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If the northeastern United States is in your travel plans over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this winter weather system which may affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of the affected areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.
