If the northeastern United States is in your immediate travel plans, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to the effects of significant precipitation resulting from a storm system.

Travel Alert July 2019: Inclement Weather to Affect Northeastern United States

When an unusually strong cold front muscles into an area which has undergone a deadly heat wave from which four people have lost their lives, the ingredients come together to create volatile situation pertaining to stormy weather.

Although most areas from extreme northern North Carolina to southwestern Connecticut and as far east as Montauk Point on Long Island in New York to as far west as eastern West Virginia are forecast to experience anywhere between one inch and two inches of precipitation, as much as five inches of rain may fall from severe thunderstorms in some local areas. Affected cities include New York, Baltimore, Greenwich, Philadelphia, Newark, Harrisburg, Trenton, Dover, Richmond, Wilmington, Atlantic City and the District of Columbia.

Flash flooding, frequent lightning, and damaging wind gusts are possible in some local areas of this region due to the expected intensity of the storms.

The good news is that the cold front will replace the heat wave with significantly more comfortable temperatures — which will be cooler by between ten and 20 degrees Fahrenheit — and reduced humidity for the remainder of this week.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from the northeastern United States over the next day or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of the affected areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.
