Travel Alert June 2022: Civil Unrest in Ecuador

If Ecuador is in your travel plans over the next few days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to civil unrest in that country, as hundreds of indigenous people across the country have been protesting for almost a week against the economic policies and social policies of Guillermo Lasso, who is the current president of Ecuador.

Travel Alert June 2022: Civil Unrest in Ecuador

Both sides appear to be working towards an agreement but are not at that point yet: the protesters are demanding a decrease in the price of fuel; a moratorium of further expansion of the oil and mining industry of Ecuador; and more time for small and medium sized farmers to pay their debts as three items of their list of demands — while Lasso has both called for peaceful constructive dialogue and announced measures to help the vulnerable sectors of society, which includes the subsidization of fertilizer; an increased budget for health and education for indigenous communities; and forgiveness of outstanding loans of up to $3,000.00.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to, from, or within Ecuador over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to the civil unrest which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of these areas, watch out for deteriorating conditions and traffic problems.

Here are three airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this civil unrest:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Quito for Monday, June 20, 2022 through Tuesday, June 21, 2022; and Saturday, July 2, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Delta Air Lines has issued a travel alert for Quito for Monday, June 20, 2022 through Sunday, June 26, 2022; and Wednesday, June 29, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • JetBlue Airways has issued a travel alert for Quito and Guayaquil for Tuesday, June 21, 2022 through Sunday, June 26, 2022; and Wednesday, June 29, 2022 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Final Boarding Call

Do not be surprised if at least some of the travel waivers have been extended while additional airlines add travel waivers.

Be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
