If the eastern United States is in your travel plans over the next couple of days or so, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to the latest weather system which will bring strong thunderstorms to the affected areas.
Travel Alert May 2022: Severe Weather to Affect Eastern United States
As much as nine inches of rain is expected to fall in some local areas — as well as potentially damaging gusty winds of up to 80 miles per hour and frequent bursts of intense lightning — due to strong thunderstorms which are forecast through Saturday, May 28, 2022 from extreme southeastern Louisiana all the way to extreme southwestern Vermont.
This storm system — which is moving slowly eastward across the United States — could result in flash flooding, hail, and isolated tornadoes. However, the rain will benefit some areas which have been experiencing drought conditions recently.
Travel will definitely be disrupted with either delays or cancellations of flights, which will be all the more compounded by the Memorial Day holiday weekend when more passengers than usual plan to fly to their destinations.
Expect highways and roadways to be temporarily difficult to navigate in some of the affected areas.
