Travel Alert October 2021: Airlines Issue More Travel Waivers For Severe Weather in the Northeastern United States

See which airlines have either issued or amended travel waivers as a result of this weather event.

If the northeastern United States is in your travel plans over the next couple of days or so, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to a severe weather system which is bringing copious amounts of precipitation and strong winds.

Travel Alert October 2021: Airlines Issue More Travel Waivers For Severe Weather in the Northeastern United States

Although rain is expected to occur as far south as northeastern North Carolina and as far west as Detroit in Michigan, this weather system is the first in a “parade” of weather systems which are forecast to bring significant precipitation to the northeastern United States.

States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey by the governors of those states.

Significant rainfall is forecast through tomorrow, Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from southern New Jersey all the way north to southern New Hampshire, with some areas possibly receiving as much as ten inches of rain. As an example, up to eight inches of rain could fall in many areas of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Additionally, many areas will be subject to significant flooding and strong winds — with gusts of as much as 80 miles per hour creating blustery conditions along the coasts of southern Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts — before this weather event concludes; and rough surf and the erosion of beaches will likely occur along coastal areas.

Electric power outages could also occur in areas of the northeastern United States — as well as trees coming down during the peak of foliage season.

Cities which will be impacted by this weather system in some form or another include New York, Boston, Portland, Philadelphia, Newark, Hartford, Virginia Beach, Chicago, Providence, Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland, Burlington, Wilmington, Charleston, Charlotte, Albany, Manchester, Harrisburg, Worcester, Trenton, Halifax, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, New Haven, Syracuse, Atlantic City, Dover, and the District of Columbia.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from the northeastern United States over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
