Travel Alert September 2018: Amsterdam Weather Waivers Issued by Airlines

If Amsterdam is in your travel plans over the next few days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to windy weather which is expected to affect air travel.

Travel Alert September 2018: Amsterdam Weather Waivers Issued by Airlines

The Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut has issued a code geel — or code yellow — warning for wind in effect from 7:00  in the morning through 10:00 in the morning Central European Standard Time on Friday, September 21, 2018 due to precipitation and winds which are expected to gust up to 95 kilometers per hour.

Wind gusts of almost 60 miles per hour — which are equivalent to tropical storm force winds — are enough to affect the operations of airplanes; and that time frame in the morning is when many flights from the United States, Canada and other countries arrive into Schiphol Airport.

A warning to be aware of flying debris being blown around was issued by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is the English translation of the Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from Amsterdam over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of these areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.

Here are three airlines which have issued travel alerts — or are at least monitoring the storm — as a result of this weather system:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Amsterdam for Thursday, September 20, 2018 through Friday, September 21, 2018; and Tuesday, September 25, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Delta Air Lines has issued a travel alert for Amsterdam for Friday, September 21, 2018; and Wednesday, September 26, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has issued a travel alert for Amsterdam for Friday, September 21, 2018; and Wednesday, September 26, 2018 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Summary

Expect additional airlines to offer travel waivers into or out of Amsterdam as a result of this storm.
