Travel Alert September 2019: Inclement Weather to Affect Chicago Metropolitan Area

If the greater metropolitan area of Chicago is in your immediate travel plans, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to the effects of significant precipitation resulting from a storm system.

Travel Alert September 2019: Inclement Weather to Affect Chicago Metropolitan Area

A cold front is currently moving eastward across the United States and will usher in a line of thunderstorms from northern Mexico to southern Canada — but localized flooding as a result of significant precipitation is expected to affect areas of the greater metropolitan area of Chicago due to possible severe weather from potentially strong thunderstorms.

A river flood warning, a flash flood watch, and a small craft advisory have all been issued for the greater metropolitan area of Chicago as a result of the expected impact of this storm system. Occasional strong winds are not out of the question either.

Surprisingly, travel waivers have not been issued by airlines for cities such as Tulsa, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Madison or Oklahoma City, as a line of strong thunderstorms from the same weather system are expected to affect those areas as well.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from the greater metropolitan area of Chicago over the next day or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary. If you are driving in any of the affected areas, watch out for deteriorating weather conditions and traffic problems.

Here are two airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Chicago for Sunday, September 22, 2019; and Wednesday, September 25, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • United Airlines has issued a travel alert for Chicago for Sunday, September 22, 2019; and Wednesday, September 25, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Summary

Additional airlines — such as Southwest Airlines, for example, which has significant operations at Midway Airport — may issue travel waivers due to this weather system.

Be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
