Travel Alert September 2019: Tropical Storm Jerry to Affect Bermuda

If Bermuda is in your travel plans over the next few days, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to Tropical Storm Jerry, of which landfall is possible but not expected, as the eye is forecast to pass north of Bermuda on the morning of Wednesday, September 24, 2019.

Maximum sustained winds of this storm — which is currently centered approximately 340 miles southwest of Bermuda and is currently moving north northwest at six miles per hour — are 65 miles per hour, which means that this storm is currently a strong tropical storm which is just shy of being a Category 1 hurricane — but strengthening to a Category 1 hurricane is not in the weather forecast for this storm.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Bermuda, which could receive up to three inches of rain — in addition to high rough surf and tropical storm-force winds.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from Bermuda over the next few days, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this tropical weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.

Here are four airlines which have issued travel alerts — or are at least monitoring the storm — as a result of this tropical weather system:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Bermuda for Tuesday, September 24, 2019 through Wednesday, September 25, 2019; and Friday, September 27, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Delta Air Lines has issued a travel alert for Bermuda for Tuesday, September 24, 2019; and Friday, September 27, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • JetBlue Airways has issued a travel alert for Bermuda for Tuesday, September 24, 2019 through Wednesday, September 25, 2019; and Friday, September 27, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • WestJet Airways has issued a travel alert for Bermuda for Monday, September 23, 2019 through Tuesday, September 24, 2019.
